How many Challengers (or Wonderers) do you have on your team? Challenging the status quo is how innovation and efficiency live and breathe. I feel, perhaps too optimistically, that as a whole we are past the phrase "this is how we've always done it." But, still I'm surprised to hear friends and acquaintances share horror stories of resistance to change or resistance to new ideas. I have a few stories of my own from previous workplaces. People who ask good questions, particularly "Why?" are the critical thinkers, the problem solvers. And, once their questions are answered, they'll come up with solutions. I've always been a challenger, met with strong resistance time and time again throughout my career. It was the places that were most resistant where I felt the most helpless, "stuck" in a place I didn't belong. So, I found a new place. Caroline A. Wanga says, "If you can't be who you are, where you are, change where you are, not who you are." Problem solvers will do just that, change WHERE they are. And, with them they'll take their innovation, creativity and efficiency. Challengers (and wonderers) live in a world of "can." Everything can be better and nothing is impossible if it solves a problem. So, value your people who ask questions. They may lead you to the answers that you didn't even know you needed.

A lot of people tell me “your calendar is always blocked” - yep, it usually is. I look out into the future (sometimes months) and back into what it’s going to take to get me or my team where I/we want to go. Then I block the time necessary to get it done. ⏰ Planning this out helps ensure that I manage my time vs. letting others fill my days with their fire drills. 🔥 It’s usually not hard to find an hour of my time if you need it — but you may have to anticipate and plan that session out a few weeks! ❓What about emergencies? ❓What about new priorities? ❓What about being flexible? Of course! We live in the gray - things aren’t always black and white. But by using this method, I am more in control of my time and can prioritize what’s important to our strategic needs.
