When finding the right words is difficult, music can be a safe and creative way for children and teens to explore difficult emotions related to grief. We offer music therapy for youth who have experienced the death of a significant person at any time, of any cause. Sessions are grouped by age: 6-9, 10-13 and 14-17 and led by a music therapist. Music Speaks provides a creative outlet for self-expression, while learning about grief and healthy coping strategies. Referring youth is easy. IMHO I feel the best time to help youth is well before there is a hint they are at risk. So you ask, "How do we know which ones will be at risk?" The answer is, we don't know. But we do know that statistically a significant percent will be challenged by learning disabilities, divorce in the family, abuse, or other difficulties. These traumatic events do not discriminate between wealth, class, religion, standing, etc. Therefore the best strategy is to inoculate as many as possible in their more formative years. Pile on positive experiences that all children can achieve. Pile on the compliments. Fill their banks of well being before the challenges smack them! https://lnkd.in/evfJbgnv

WHY? To help people manage their social & mental health through the arts; art, dance, film, music, opera, poetry, theatre … We aim to raise awareness of and provide resources to manage your mental health. A number of creative people have suffered with mental illness, some have died by suicide. I’ve dealt with trauma & suffered from situational depression — partly as a result of experiencing unemployment. In late May 2019, a musician with whom I used to play died by suicide after struggling with bipolar disorder. Covid + changes in arts/music funding (e.g. recent ACE grant restructuring especially in the classical arena) + Brexit + “cost of living” aka greed crisis have had/are having a dramatic impact on performers in the UK. Many musicians earn fractions of a penny each time their music is streamed. https://lnkd.in/eYNctWM8
