Help adorn St. Joe’s with decorated ceiling tiles to promote wellness in healthcare settings! You can sponsor a ceiling tile in honour or in memory of a loved one, or simply to give back to St. Joe’s. Donors can select from more than 20 pre-painted ceiling tiles, including the ones featured here, and pick a preferred area of the hospital where they would like the ceiling tile installed. To view the selection of available ceiling tiles or to donate, visit https://lnkd.in/g29nkQwc This program is in collaboration with The Mac Med Mural Project, led by a group of medical students at McMaster University who have painted unique works of art on ceiling tiles – an unconventional canvas designed to bring smiles to the faces of patients, family members, visitors, volunteers, and healthcare workers alike. The beautiful designs include messages of hope, resilience, and strength. 🎨Tile 1: ‘Breeze’ by Anshika Jain ($125) “Some days are windy and gloomy but then at some point the sun will peek out, and there will be a warm breeze to bask in. I think even through the stormiest days of life, by remaining intentional about seeking beauty in the difficult moments we do find it and have the power to transform our experience.” 🎨 Tile 2: Milo & Otis by Asil El Galad, Michaela Dowling and Sabrina Sikka ($125) “Milo and Otis are two dogs cuddling each other in a warm sweater. We hope this image reminds us to lean into our support systems during difficult moments, as love can sometimes be just as powerful as medicine.” 🎨 Tile 3: Water & Sunlight by Stephanie Chen ($125) “Just below the surface is a world of both tranquil stillness and flowing peace. If you turn your face towards the sky, sunlight dances on the waves and warms your skin. Just like a fond memory of a day at the beach, I hope that this piece brings you peace and calm!”

Unfamiliar settings can be a major stressor for children and healthcare environments are no exception when it comes to heightened anxiety levels. Engaging young patients in their surroundings can help to promote a sense of calm. Children naturally want to move around and explore their environment. Establishing spaces tailored to their needs—where they can engage in play, delve into reading, or merely unwind—elevates their overall comfort level within healthcare settings. Think Global. Connecting people, spaces and care. Following up on recent "The Gilded Age" post ... https://lnkd.in/eqieXnF9 In the movie 300, a messenger asks King Leonidas for “a simple offering of earth and water.” This line has always intrigued me as “earth and water” in this context often resembles “brick and mortar” in the context of our healthcare system. Much time, energy, capital, and human resource have been invested in brick and mortar in healthcare with much pomp and circumstance. But does a shiny new building represent a true achievement when/if those within the building, i.e., doctors, nurses, staff, patients, families, are not receiving the highest quality of care and/or are being harmed? In the article, "Where are the adaptive leaders in healthcare?" there is an account of a leader at a local community hospital who shared a “success” story about emergency room access: The challenge at hand was a dramatic increase in emergency room (ER) visits, lack of efficient access to the floors (patient flow), and high numbers of patients waiting too long for care (access). The technical solution was a significant capital investment and expansion of the emergency department at this hospital — using brick and mortar ("earth and water") to solve the problem. And yet, at no time did leadership truly explore a more adaptive solution by investigating the reasons for the increase in ED visits. No one engaged people both inside and outside of the hospital in the tougher discussions to better understand the root cause of this increased reliance on the ED. No one spoke to the doctors, nurses, staff on the frontlines. No one spoke to the community based organizations, e.g., Area Agency on Aging, Housing, etc. No one spoke to the patients and families. In the end, no one engaged with the community to listen and understand, address root causes, improve well-being, and decrease the reliance on the ED. The emergency department was expanded, it was deemed a success, the achievement was celebrated. The gild? Today the reliance on this ED has increased, the overall health of the care team and the community has not. The cheapness of the metal underneath? New medical office buildings can be impressive works of architecture and construction that can be necessary and have a positive impact. But are we leaders just as willing to invest in engaging our neighbors, addressing complexity and root causes, and improving the health of our communities? To ensure the highest-quality of caring is provided always within and without the healthcare system? To truly, in right-action, care for (love) our neighbor as ourselves? Our teams, our neighbors are hurting. They need us. We all need each other. Together. 🙏 💙 🙏 Dahlborg HealthCARING Leadership Group, LLC (DHLG) "Love your neighbor as yourself." - Jesus Christ Also read parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:29-37)

Trauma Informed Acoustical Design: To serve those in a building designed for mental and physical trauma patients, I need to help my architects with so much more than wall type selection and choosing surface finishes. Beyond what framing to use and how many layers of gypsum to put between noise sensitive areas, I consider: -how noise and vibration from mechanical systems gets into the structure -how ventilation will help or prevent noise transfer -what background noise levels are appropriate for different uses within the building -how long sound will persist in rooms and hallways -how to keep sensitive recording areas free from unwanted noise -where can we place noisy areas (with possible barking 🐕 kennels) to minimize their impact -how to ensure employees can let their hair down in the break room without being heard by patients -how annual corporate events or fundraisers will function in a facility open and serving the distressed every day of the year I am grateful for the many people who live to serve those at the lowest point in their lives, and I hope to assist them by ensuring the building they will work in is designed to provide privacy and to promote calmness.
