Suicide Survivor | Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Educator | Leveraging Lived/Living Experience to Advance Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Education | Social Justice Advocate
The 2024 US National Strategy for Suicide Prevention is out. The Strategy for Suicide Prevention is a bold new 10-year, comprehensive, whole-of-society approach to suicide prevention that provides concrete recommendations for addressing gaps in the suicide prevention field. This strategy addresses suicide at the national, state, tribal, local, and territorial levels and relies upon critical partnerships across the public and private sectors. To ensure effective actions are advanced in accordance with the Federal Action Plan, people with lived/living experience have been and remain critical to the implementation of this strategy. A few of the Lived/Living and Peer Support Goals: - It is important for all community efforts to be led and informed by community leaders and people with lived experience to reduce health disparities and to help protect against unintended trauma - Offering ongoing opportunities for connectedness and peer support - Investing in culturally competent evidence-based peer support services - Comprehensive suicide prevention requires a range of voices, identities, and perspectives informed by lived experience. This ensures that acceptable, accessible, and effective approaches to suicide prevention are chosen and implemented. - Provide Postvention After Suicide Deaths and Support for People With Suicide-Centered Lived Experience - Create and sustain public-private partnerships and coalitions at the national, state, and local levels, representing diverse populations, perspectives, and broad suicide-centered lived experiences to extend reach and strengthen suicide prevention outcomes Perspectives from Lived Experience. Individuals using the health care system can benefit most when services are delivered in a way that respects cultural and spiritual traditions. Further, individuals with suicide-centered lived experience can offer invaluable insight and leadership to improve suicide preventive care. Connecting them to effective community-based peer supports provides opportunities to supplement clinical interventions. I am happy to see a Federal Action Plan attached to this that identifies more than 200 actions across the federal government to be taken over the next three years in support of those goals. Thanks for this resource DeQuincy Meiffren-Lezine and congratulations and thank you Shelby Rowe. Thank you for your much-needed voice as a suicide survivor to speak to the challenges we are all facing and the gaps in our approaches to suicide prevention services and initiatives.
