The US Air Force's Ambitious Plan: The Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program, a key focus for the Air Force, aims to develop highly autonomous drones to work alongside advanced fighters like the F-35A and the Next Generation Air Dominance fighter. 2. Achieving "Affordable Mass" in Warfare: The program envisions the production of at least 1,000 "Loyal Wingman" drones within five years, intended for roles such as electronic warfare and air defense suppression. On October 14, 2024, Leonardo DRS and BlueHalo unveiled a new variant of the Stryker 8x8 Infantry Combat Vehicle (ICV), known as the Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System (C-UAS) Directed Energy (DE) Stryker. This advanced vehicle, showcased at the AUSA 2024 conference, is equipped with a laser-directed energy weapon, laser-guided 70mm rockets, a 30mm automatic cannon, and an array of radars and sensors. Recently, the companies conducted a successful live-fire demonstration of the C-UAS DE Stryker, effectively neutralizing Group 1-3 UAS targets. The C-UAS DE Stryker integrates cutting-edge technology to enhance Ground-Based Anti-Ship Missile (GBASM) operations. During a demonstration in Socorro, New Mexico, the mobile C-UAS system utilized BlueHalo’s 26kW LOCUST Laser Weapon System to destroy multiple drones over two days. This event highlighted the vehicle's capabilities in executing near-simultaneous counter-UAS and ground engagements using both the laser weapon and a 30mm remote weapon station (RWS). The C-UAS DE Stryker is positioned as a potential solution for the U.S. Army's increasing interest in laser-armed technologies to bolster its short-range air defense (SHORAD) capabilities.Equipped with two primary kinetic effectors—the R400S remote weapon station armed with a 30mm chain gun and a 70mm laser-guided rocket launcher—the C-UAS DE Stryker also features Next-Gen Multi-Mission Hemispheric Radars (nMHR) and a 360° camera for enhanced detection and tracking of threats. This combination allows for effective engagement of both air and ground targets.The C-UAS DE Stryker represents an ongoing effort to refine mobile directed energy systems for counter-drone roles, addressing challenges identified in previous tests. The Army is currently fielding a baseline M-SHORAD variant known as Sgt.
