Engine-Makers Wrestle With Production, Durability Issues As Market Rebounds With yet another bruising year in the rearview mirror, commercial engine-makers are hoping for better things in 2024 as supply chain pressures slowly ease and production continues to catch up with surging demand from aircraft manufacturers. The coming year marks the start of a new era for GE Aerospace, which is expected to be spun off as a stand-alone entity from General Electric at the start of the second quarter. Underpinned by the steady success of its GEnx-1B on the Boeing 787 and ongoing sales of the Leap 1 through its CFM International joint venture with Safran, the engine-maker appears to be in a solid position as it enters this new phase. General Electric: Leading the pack with a 55% market share, GE's dominance is strengthened by its partnership with French engine maker Safran through CFM International, which accounts for 39% of this share. Including CFM products, GE leads the aircraft engine market globally. GE alone holds 16%, powering a wide range of aircraft. 2. Pratt & Whitney: Holding a 26% share, P&W focuses on innovative solutions for narrow-body jets. P&W engines can be found on the Airbus A220, A320 family, and A330, as well as the Boeing 747-400, 767, and Embraer E-jets. 3. Built on decades of proven architectures, the CFM LEAP engine has over 35 million flight hours logged.   #CFMLEAP has built a reputation as a leader in efficiency and asset utilization. In airline service, it is demonstrating better durability in neutral environments than the previous-generation CFM56 product line at the same point in that engine’s life. However, in hotter and dustier flying environments like the Middle East, durability has turned out to be a bigger challenge. That’s why GE Aerospace engineers are “turning on” the problem in their test cells, so they can turn off the challenges the LEAP engine is facing in the field.
