Given the inherent unpredictability and the potential for respiratory infectious diseases to reach unprecedented peaks, we need to emphasize here the critical importance of rigorously adhering to immunization programs adopted in every nation and the pivotal role of real-time surveillance for these 3 viruses. Primary care pediatricians, leveraging viral point-of-care tests, can assume a vital role in strengthening this surveillance and ensuring the meticulous adherence to immunization programs.

As students head back to school this month, a quick reminder that it's also National Immunization Awareness Month. Vaccines (such as the flu vaccine) can optimize student health and attendance by: 🍎1. Providing immunity and preventing disease outbreaks from the beginning 🍎2. Reducing the spread of disease in school as a part of an infection prevention control strategy, thereby reducing the: • Number of students and teachers who get sick and are absent • Probability of an unplanned school closure due to illness 🍎3. Reducing the duration of disease and thereby number of school days missed due to poor health

Vaccine-preventable respiratory diseases (VPRDs), including influenza, COVID-19, pneumococcal pneumonia, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) pose an ever-increasing threat around the world, particularly in the context of declining immunization rates, increased burden of disease and strained health care systems. Recognizing the opportunities and challenges associated with population ageing, there is a need to maximize the impact of effective national public health interventions, including immunization, which can contribute to living healthier lives and trajectories. Today, we honor the memory of Kimberly Coffey, who tragically passed away 12 years ago, just one week before her high school graduation, due to Meningitis B. Kimberly’s big smile and vibrant spirit continues to inspire our mission at the American Society for Meningitis Prevention, reminding us of the critical importance of our work to advocate for comprehensive protection against all 5 serogroups (A-B-C-W-Y) of bacteria most likely to cause meningococcal meningitis in the U.S. It’s a big year for meningitis prevention with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) set to revisit meningococcal vaccine recommendations. It is our hope that the real-life impact of this devastating disease is front and center in their discussions as we cannot afford to loose another life to a now vaccine-preventable disease. Kimberly, you remain forever in our hearts. 💕
