I know some of you will not agree with this but here's my contrarian take for someone who recently graduated and wants to excel in their career: 1). Move to SF/NYC. 2). Work in the office 4-5 times a week with your peers. 3). Spend your evenings and weekend either learning (books/blogs) more about your industry or networking with the folks in your industry. Remember: add value before you ask for anything. Spend first ten years of your career following the above, you will be in the top 5% of your graduating class, I can guarantee it.

It's not about filling jobs, it's about completing futures. An often-overlooked piece of wisdom in our industry is that recruitment, particularly within education, has the potential to dramatically influence the trajectory of lives - not only the individuals being placed but, more importantly, the students they will inspire. As leaders within this sector, we have a unique responsibility to consider the broader picture and implications of our work. Every job advertisement we post signifies an opportunity; an opportunity for a leader to foster growth in a learning environment, a chance for them to kindle curiosity in young minds, and ultimately to shape our societies' future narrative. We are not simply filling vacancies; we're bridging gaps between ambition and actualisation. Just as teachers leave indelible marks on their students' lives, so do recruiters in their search for these educators. With each role filled, each placement made – we play a part in shaping society’s educational foundation. After all, we are placing individuals who influence future generations. Including inspirational quotes in our communication reflects our belief in the transformative power of education - one I'm sure we all share. As Alexander The Great once said: “I am indebted to my father for living, but to my teacher for living well.” We truly are creating futures beyond just filling roles – how's that for some midweek motivation?

My new book – “Create Your Exciting Career! Workplaces in Unusual Spaces” – has just been released! “Create Your Exciting Career!” helps middle and high school kids consider not only what they might do in their careers, but how and where they might do it in special and unusual ways. The best of all possible choices includes doing what you are good at, doing it in an interesting way, and doing it is exciting places! That is what makes life exciting! This book is geared especially for middle and high school kids, and can be a useful resource for school and career counselors. It is important for kids in this age group to become aware that for almost any career choice that meets their interests, they can decide to do things a little differently -- to make their career and lives more exciting and unusual. Rather than the traditional paths of becoming a teacher and getting a job in the local public school system, for instance, they can decide to go an unconventional path, for example, by developing educational programs and teaching overseas for the United States Agency for International Development, the US Peace Corps, or World Learning. 🗣 I was excited to chat with Bruno Manno of the Progressive Policy Institute about my upcoming book, Job Moves. We covered a lot in our conversation. Here’s some of what we talked about: ➡ The four “quests for progress” that motivate people to search for a new job—some are looking to get out of their current situation, others want to take the next step in their career, and more… ➡ Why people should think more about experiences (e.g. their day-to-day) than features (e.g. a better title) when weighing opportunities ➡ How the K–12 system can implement some of our findings to improve career education 👂 Give it a listen and let me know what questions or insights you’ve had about how to make your next job move the right one—or how else you’d adapt this for schools.
