It was a pleasure to join my good friend, David Thomas, President at Morehouse College, for a fireside chat to celebrate the 110 year anniversary of the Atlanta Rotary Club. To commemorate the critical role the Rotary Club has played in bringing together local #business, #education and #community leaders, the theme of the club this year is “Leadership Lessons for Service and Growth.” During our discussion, Dave and I spoke about how Atlanta has become a growing #tech hub thanks to the leadership of Mayor Andre Dickens, the opportunity that Vista Equity Partners sees in the region and how we are viewing challenges over the next year. We also discussed how businesses can support the community, including by supporting educational and economic equity by working with organizations like Student Freedom Initiative and Southern Communities Initiative (SCI). It will take all of us, the private sector, public sector, nonprofits and educational institutions, to expand opportunity for all Americans and create strong companies.

An insightful discussion about succession highlighting the different approaches and considerations family businesses can take when passing on leadership and ownership. As explained here, it’s important that successor feel as sense of justice in how the business is divided, how everyone is compensated, and how senior leadership came to their decisions. Data plays a key role in showing successors how they add value to the business, helping them understand expectations while ensuring their positions in the company are earned. Also, family businesses can also consider ‘leadership teams’ that help create unity and agreement across siblings, so long as they work well together rather than in competition with one another. #familybusiness #successionplanning #inheritance

Presidents Day is about honoring our founding fathers. But it's also a chance to recognize great leadership. Here are three lessons in leadership from OG influencers who rocked the powdered wigs and guarded the Constitution: 𝟭. 𝗕𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 & 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗼𝘂𝘀 The founding fathers embodied unwavering belief in their vision and demonstrated bravery against formidable odds. Lesson: Be bold and take risks. 𝟮. 𝗕𝗲 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 & 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲 Leadership involves listening to different perspectives. The Founding Fathers understood the importance of: -debate -discussion -compromise All key to drafting the Constitution and establishing a new government. Lesson: Be open to different viewpoints. 𝟯. 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 The vision of the Founding Fathers were not limited to their personal interests. They fought for the rights and freedoms of all citizens. They thought beyond themselves. They shaped a greater good. Lesson: Create a vision people can get behind Just as our founding fathers shaped the nation. As business owners and leaders we need to embody their values of leadership. These principles are the backbone of building trust in the digital age. -- Today, our office is closed. We are taking the day to honor our founding fathers. But we'll be back at it again tomorrow. 🗽📜

Two years ago, we asked Chicago business leaders to publicly commit to advance racial equity by re-thinking business policies and practices one year after George Floyd’s murder. Twenty-five companies responded and 5/25 Move to Action was born. Firms such as Bank of America and others have taken meaningful action to change business practices in a way that will create a more equitable region. Chicago has a history of civic leadership and engagement that is the envy of most other cities. Working individually and together, Chicago’s businesses have the potential to create a more dynamic, prosperous region, where the economy is growing, opportunity is increasing and equitably shared, and personal and public safety are the norm. While this represents an inspiring start, we need to think bigger about the role of the business community in creating the region to which we all aspire. We invite all business leaders in our region to join in this important work. Read the linked report to see what we've learned along the way from the 25 pioneering companies that made commitments in support of 5/25 Move to Action.
