Black History is a constant happening. An everyday occurrence, and when history we made, we celebrate it. Why? Because to not celebrate our history is to accept the place we stand in it. As we continue to celebrate and honor those history makers, let us not only embrace the lessons of our past but also acknowledge the imperative need to learn from history, empower the present, and sculpt a future where equity and justice are intrinsic to every individual's existence. This is something we strive for at Urban League of Philadelphia beyond programming and community efforts. So Today we would like to highlight Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis who became the first Black Lt. Governor in the state of #pennsylvania in January of 2023. He also became the youngest person to serve in his position in the United States. Since then, Davis has vowed to sow hope and opportunity for the ignored, forgotten and to further advance the cause of social and economic justice for all, “especially Black and brown young people.” Whether it be advocating for after school programs, supporting minority-owned businesses, seeking to end gun violence, or speaking out for those unhoused, unprotected, and un-alived; Davis has been sure to keep his promise. Urban League works tirelessly each day to serve Greater Philadelphia, it is because of community partners and leaders like Lt. Gov Davis in the fight toward equity who help us get the job done and make history. The highest concentration of Black Millionaires & Billionaires is in Entertainment, Media & Sports . Those areas also have the lowest number of OWNERS . We have to change this narrative. I share the importance of Ownership of the preeminent business assets we create because history has proven Ownership of IP & Real Estate is the only way to bridging the Generational Wealth Gap. I hope more of us begin to realize how important this conversation is to the Generational Wellness of our community. I hope more of you share messages that will help secure a better future for our kids. Start by holding those you hold in such high regard in our community responsible . Responsibility & Accountability for multiplying Black Wealth is no longer an option it’s a necessity for the wellness of our community. This #BlackHistoryMonth, we embark on a journey – not just to celebrate past triumphs, but to confront the enduring legacy of housing discrimination in the United States. From redlining and restrictive covenants to predatory lending and modern-day segregation, Black communities have faced systemic barriers to safe, affordable housing for generations. The consequences are still deeply felt today: higher rates of cost burdens, foreclosures, and limited access to homeownership. These disparities aren't mere statistics; they represent broken promises, shattered dreams, and the ongoing struggle for equity. Understanding the past is crucial to building a more just future. Together, let's honor the past by building a future where everyone has access to safe, affordable housing, regardless of race or background. This Black History Month, let's rewrite the narrative.

Our corps members remind us why representation matters in the classroom, and of the power of a teacher who understands your experiences and can model what’s possible. As we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., MICEO is highlighting his efforts to create a more equitable life for black Americans. Dr. King was quoted as saying “Our struggle is for genuine equality, which means economic equality.” Some fifty-plus years later, the United States is still woefully short on creating economic equality. Per the Department of the Treasury, the median income for Black American families was 67.9% of that of the average American family in 2020. MICEO is proud to work to correct this inequality through its W.K. Kellogg Foundation - supported project focused on creating employee ownership opportunities in Grand Rapids area black neighborhoods. The project seeks to assist businesses that employ black community members to pursue employee ownership as an exit strategy. A successful ownership transfer would provide the new employee-owners with improved income opportunities, an equity stake in the business, and a greater voice in the company operations. This, we hope, will start narrowing the income and wealth gap for Black American communities as envisioned by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. more than half a century ago. #martinlutherkingjr #employeeownership #Michigan
