What’s the true cost of layoffs? A recent Bloomberg article I read, got me thinking!! In today’s fast-paced business landscape, layoffs are often seen as necessary to align costs with revenue. However, while it might offer an immediate fix, it can have profound implications beyond financial relief. The Bloomberg article uses Meta as an example. They laid off 11,00 employees in November 2022 at a cost of $975 million in severance!! Meta claimed it led to long-term savings!! They didn’t consider the hidden costs of; 1) Reduced productivity 2) Increased voluntary departures 3) Potential legal fees They created a far-reaching ripple effect. Severance packages might seem to cushion the blow, but the subsequent decline in morale and productivity among remaining employees poses a significant challenge. Leaders must recognise that layoffs, while sometimes unavoidable, should not be the default response to financial difficulties. I believe that businesses should explore alternatives like temporary furloughs and strategic workforce redeployment. These could mitigate the negative impact on both people and productivity, helping the company to emerge stronger, without sacrificing well-being and trust. My view is that rightsizing is key to ensuring a workforce aligns with the needs of the business. By focusing on strategic workforce planning and avoiding over-expansion, we can prevent the disruption of cutting large numbers of employees. Layoffs should be a last resort, not a go-to solution. How do you approach workforce planning in your business?

Last year, Meta increased their earnings by 25% and reduced their workforce by 22%. That’s 19,000 people. Our CEO, Ann Kowal Smith addresses the question many of us are wondering: how will such deep layoffs affect the future of work? The answer is grim, and complex. I am not a big Meta or Zuck fan but this makes a lot of sense. Companies are looking for better was of operating without having unnecessary staff. Zuck said that companies are no longer shrinking their employee size simply because of over hiring and they're now realizing there can be benefits to being leaner. It has taken some of these companies a little longer to figure this out, which is the most interesting aspect for me. Leaner is always better. ♻ Repost to spread the word #layoffs #linkedin (Tap that bell 🔔 to follow me David Dickey, Comments are welcome!)

🚨Single-Skilled Workers Face Serious Risks. Well, I agree with his advice as it aligns with the logic, "It's not how much you know, but how well you know what you know." 📚 The rapid influx of information shortens our attention spans, leading us to prioritize multiple activities over productivity in any one area. 📉 **BUT BE CAUTIOUS** ⚠️ Focusing solely on just ONE skill might land one a job at Meta, but if layoffs occur, one could struggle to find another job if employers aren't interested in that single skill. 🔍 This issue isn't unique to any country or employer; it's a common misconception that can mislead many. 🌍

Silicon Valley's Soul-Crushing Spa Day: Mass Layoffs and the New Normal Remember the good ol' days when tech bros got paid to ski and nap pods were more common than cubicles? Yeah, me neither. 2023 saw tech giants shed employees faster than a Kardashian sheds designer labels, and 2024 isn't shaping up much better. Brace yourselves, folks, 'cause the layoff headlines are back with a vengeance! Remember Jack Welch, the OG layoff king? Turns out, his "cut the fat" philosophy is alive and well, except they're using fancier terms like "restructuring" and "streamlining" now. Google, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft – you name it, they're all trimming the workforce like a celebrity prepping for a red carpet appearance. ✂️ What gives? Well, the pandemic hiring spree went a little overboard. Turns out, not everyone you pay to play ping pong actually contributes to the bottom line. Companies are also bracing for a potential recession and, oh yeah, AI is breathing down their collective neck. So, what's a CEO to do? Layoffs, duh! But hey, don't worry about the massage therapists and nap pod enthusiasts – they're just collateral damage in the quest for bigger profits. Alphabet, Google's parent company, is raking in billions, but hey, gotta get rid of those pesky massage therapists, right? Priorities, People! Priorities! Of course, for the actual humans getting laid off, it's not exactly a walk in the park. Bills, families, mental health – these are real concerns that get swept under the rug when companies talk about "efficiency." But hey, at least the job market is "stabilizing," so that's something...right? So, what does the future hold? More layoffs? Probably. Will it be a total bloodbath like 2023? Maybe not. But one thing's for sure: the days of free massages and unlimited snacks are over. Buckle up, techies, it's gonna be a bumpy ride! #techlayoffs #siliconvalley #recession #AI #profits #massagetherapistsarepeopletoo #ripnappods **P.S. Anyone got a spare ski trip invitation? My severance package only covers ramen. **

🚨 The New Reality of Big Tech Layoffs 🚨 Many tech companies, including Meta, are shifting from sweeping job cuts to more focused, department-specific layoffs. This trend marks a new normal in the industry, where constant workforce adjustments have become the norm. 📉 The impact is clear—tech workers are feeling the pressure, with job insecurity leading many to explore opportunities outside of traditional tech roles. Stability is becoming a rare commodity. 🔄 Companies like Meta are doubling down on growth areas such as AI, while reducing roles in others like VR. It’s a strategic pivot towards profitability, but it comes with challenges. 💡 Wall Street has often rewarded these cost-cutting measures, pushing companies to prioritize efficiency over expansion. Yet, the long-term effects raise questions about sustainability. 💬 Experts caution that frequent layoffs can erode employee trust and morale, potentially hindering a company’s recovery and future growth. How do you think this evolving landscape will shape the future of tech work? #TechLayoffs #BigTech #JobMarket #AI #EmployeeMorale #FutureOfWork #WorkforceAdjustments #JobSecurity #TechIndustry #CareerTransition https://lnkd.in/gGNuQcHk
