Here's my HONEST list of red, orange and green flags that I look for when hiring for our premium boutique gym 🚩 Green Flags - things that help me hire them 🟢 They understand they've got a lot to learn 🟢 They're positive 🟢 They're in the industry to help people 🟢 They want to be part of a team 🟢 They value constant improvement and learning 📈 🟢 They know about our gym, brand and concept and are excited to work with us Orange Flags - things that we need to dig deeper on 🟠 They've been in the fitness industry for a long time 🟠 They've owned their own gym or studio 🟠 Pay appears to be a primary focus for them 🟠 They've only worked in big-box gyms 🟠 They want a quick route to management or another position in the company Red flags - things that probably mean we won't be offering a position or moving to the next stage of the interview process 🚩 They're late for the interview (no apology and we might as well call it a day there and then!) 🚩 They know nothing about our company 🚩 They say they aren't a morning person 🚩 They speak ill of their last employer or work environment 🚩 They're excited about fitness in general and their training, but are less enthusiastic (or unenthusiastic) about helping other people hit their goals That's a quick list, but in reality there are probably another 10-20 little things that we all consciously and subconsciously look out for 👀 The longer you hire for, the more you know what to look out for. At the weekend I put myself out of my comfort zone and took part in Endure 24 in Leeds. Endure 24 is a 24-hour running event, where participants run an 8k lap as many times as possible. This can be done as an individual, a pair or as a team. Luckily I was part of a four-man team, as I am not sure the solo life is for me. Running and fitness is a big part of my life, but I had never done an event like this so was not sure what to expect. The event turned out to be one of the toughest challenges I have done both physically and mentally. Whilst the first few laps were relatively easy the longer the day went on and especially into the night the tougher the challenge got. I ended up completing 8 laps of the 8k course and a total of 40 miles. The furthest I had ever run in an event before was Manchester Marathon. I am a big believer in sport and endurance events complimenting work and providing characteristics that can be used at work on a day-to-day basis. I believe this is especially true in sales or business development roles. These characteristics include teamwork, communication skills and mental resilience, all of which I had to rely on over the weekend. Mental resilience was definitely needed when my next lap was at 1.30am in the morning and I already had completed 20 miles of running. As per some of my previous posts I am currently in search for a new role, and I am finding that the current job market is providing a lot of rejection. I certainly find that taking part in hard sporting events helps me manage these rejections better. Muscles & Management 12 (Hiring) Bodybuilders are too vain! They are all brawn & no brains! That sportsperson must be planning his meals all the time! Some actual statements i heard in my offices. What qualities you look for when hiring? Do sportspersons, bodybuilders, marathoners, make good managers? Hiring fitness enthusiasts in management positions has many advantages. First, Discipline. It could be harsh winters, they might have had a long day at work. They go the extra mile & rarely Procrastinate. Second, Goals. They know how to set & achieve goals. Now isn’t that we all do in the business world? An extra kilo lifted, a minute shaved from the run, adding some inches to their previous best. They plan & patiently persevere. Third, Mindset. We push limits, deal with setbacks, bounce back. Now that’s a mindset required in managers to navigate challenges & drive success. They invest in personal development & self-improvement. As a most significant window of opportunity approaches for many of us, the 2024 Olympic Trials, then the Paris Summer Olympics and Paralympics, I have a question. Have your athletes been through a thorough and rigorous media training program? In my near 30 years of experience in broadcast television, the lack of this training often times shows up in the most significant moments, usually in front of me on the track after a tremendous or heart breaking moment at the Trials, or on the biggest global stage for our sport, in the mixed zone at the Olympic Games in front of the world on live television. If this is something you are considering, will that training be from someone with personal experience in the arena, offering real world, philosophical and practical teaching, experiences and examples to prepare your athletes as they represent themselves, their brand(s) and their country? I have been conducting these sessions for many years with Olympic level athletes, those preparing for the NFL Combine at the previous Michael Johnson Performance in McKinney, TX and IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL, as well as in other arenas like auto racing. I bring my many years of live television interactions with athletes, coaches and executives to bare that will absolutely benefit everyone involved, and in my professional opinion, this is critical training worthy of the nominal investment because our Olympic window is so small. We are now in that “sweet spot” before the Olympic Trials and now is the time to get this training done to prepare your athletes, the clients your agency represents, or for whom your federation will lead to the Games. The goals are to help everyone get closer to being a complete athlete by first, understanding the magnitude of this global media event and how you fit in, learning the value of telling your story and get specific instruction on how to do so. For federations, agencies, shoe companies and other sponsors, the goals are to provide that final critical training to support the investment you’ve made in someone and their talent. As we all know, the Summer Games stage only comes our way every four years, and I want everyone to be prepared for a spectacular Paris Olympic experience. Here are my top 5 tips to help you navigate your way from passion to profession: You Don’t Have to Start in a Typical Gym: Start teaching anywhere you can – dance studios, recreation centers, universities, even for free to friends and family. My first classes were taught on a college knoll, which led to a job at the university rec center. Don’t limit yourself to big box gyms; explore every opportunity. Trainings Are More Than Education: Conferences and workshops are gold mines for networking. My first SCW Mania in Atlanta introduced me to contacts who have been pivotal in my career. Connect with everyone – from presenters to fellow attendees. Those relationships are as valuable as the education itself. You Cannot Teach It All: I tried teaching 30 classes a week and burned out. Learn from my mistake: don’t overextend yourself. Find your limit and stick to it. Saying ‘no’ is essential to maintaining your health and passion. Have an Exit Plan: Plan for the future. Injuries or life changes can shift your path. Transitioning into roles like management, writing, or consulting can keep you in the industry without the physical demands. The fitness industry offers diverse opportunities beyond teaching or training. Get Rid of Your Duds: Don’t hold onto roles that drain you. Letting go of unfulfilling jobs can make room for better opportunities. I left a job that misaligned with my values and quickly found success with new clients and projects. Twenty years ago, I started teaching just to stay active with friends. Today, I create certifications, write for industry associations, and present at conferences. Your fitness career can take you places you never imagined. Be open-minded, network relentlessly, and take care of yourself along the way. Finding Balance: How My Fitness Journey Enhances My Recruitment Career 💼🏋️♂️ As a new recruiter, I've learned the importance of balance in both professional and personal life. My journey in the gym has not only transformed my physical health but has also had a big impact on my recruitment career. Here's what I have learnt so far 👇🏽 Discipline and Consistency: Just like in the gym, consistency is key in recruitment. The discipline I've developed through regular workouts translates directly into my work ethic. Meeting fitness goals requires dedication, and the same applies to sourcing the right candidates and building strong relationships with clients. Resilience and Adaptability: In the gym, you encounter setbacks and challenges that require resilience and adaptability. Similarly, the recruitment world is dynamic, with its share of rejections and unexpected hurdles. By facing difficulties head-on in the gym, I've built the resilience needed. Don’t get me wrong, I am not perfect but I have improved massively too by doing the job. Stress Management: Recruitment can be demanding, with tight deadlines and high-pressure situations. Engaging in physical activity serves as a stress reliever, allowing me to approach work with a clear mind and renewed energy. Whether it's lifting weights or tackling tough assignments, the endorphins from exercise enhance my productivity and focus. Networking Opportunities: The gym isn't just a place for me to work out. For me it's also a fun place for networking and building connections. Similarly, engaging in fitness activities outside of work opens doors to meet new people and expand my professional network. These connections often lead to unexpected opportunities and collaborations in my recruitment endeavors. While excelling in my career is important, I believe it's equally crucial to have a personal hobby outside of work. Investing time in fitness not only enhances my performance as a recruiter but also contributes to my overall well-being and happiness.
