One interview tip for Software Engineers to spot a good technology culture: Ask the interviewer how Engineering and Product work together in detail. If Engineering leadership do not view Product as a highly valuable ally and integrate them into the Engineering ecosystem with critical importance and vice versa, then this would be a red flag for me and I have bad news for you. Either the leadership do not have the experience here, or its an Engineering led tech team with an ego.

Many engineers want to advance to staff or principal positions, yet they often overlook the fact that maintaining their current tasks will not lead to promotion. It's not solely about tenure or hard skills. If you want to get there, you also need to change your mindset. Here are some things you must shift on your mindset. - 👴 You’re relying on tenure. - 🌱 You’re relying too much on your manager. - ⚖️ You're off balance with technical and non-technical aspects. - 🎯 You don’t go beyond your primary responsibilities. - 🤚 You don’t embrace criticism. Do you want know more and understand how to change it? See my latest post on subsktack.

New developers should develop their career with this in mind. Good backend principles (SOLID), UI (KISS), testing, and cloud! Opens a lot more avenues VS too niched down (although I think you should niche down real hard on 1 programming language eventually when you reach mid-level).
Great software engineers have one thing in common. It's not that they know a specific technology well, it's that they can parse new information quickly to solve problems. That's why top tech companies don't care what language you interview in. They just want strong generalists at most levels. This changes if you're hired as a specialist, but that's less common. Focus on high-level ideas and patterns that you can take with you wherever you go. This will go a lot further than remembering specific details about the technology and tools you use.

The Engineering Career Coach | Microsoft, Yahoo, SAP, Carnegie Mellon | Engineering with People Intelligence
Expectations from software engineers these days: Be a leader without a title. Master new tech by yesterday. Crush those aggressive deadlines. Juggle multiple projects like a pro. On-call life? 8760 hours per year. That said, Recognition for extra hours fades quickly. Your promotion is forever a dangling carrot. Your genius gets overshadowed by politics. Salary bumps feel embarrassingly tiny. Feedback loop? Rare and ineffective. Uff, no thank you! But... What if the game isn't rigged? Perhaps you're just playing it wrong. What if your boss is clueless about your real potential? What if your genius work isn't shining as bright as it could? What if you're not giving others the lens to see your true colors? So, you might wonder, "How do I amp up trust in my skills?" The answer lies in my course, The Top Engineer Method. You'll learn: → How to mentor others → How to add value beyond code → How to lead projects to success → How to adapt to industry shifts → How to overcome engineering challenges → How to bridge the gap between tech and business → How to align your skills with the company's vision This builds trust. This shouts adaptability. This screams GROWTH. So, if you're frustrated by these expectations, it's time to step up your game. Start making a transformative impact. Full Stack Software Engineer || Java || Spring Boot || JavaScript || React || Next.js || Node.js || SQL || NoSQL || REST APIs
How to create a thriving environment for software engineers: ❌ Micromanage every task ↳ You'll end up stifling creativity and innovation. ❌ Force long hours to meet deadlines ↳ Burnout is real, and it destroys productivity and morale. Or: ✅ Trust your engineers to solve problems their way ↳ Empowerment fosters ownership and responsibility. ✅ Encourage learning and experimentation ↳ Regularly sponsor time for engineers to explore new tools and ideas that can benefit the team. ✅ Create a clear path for growth and mentorship ↳ Engineers thrive when they can see a future for themselves—whether it's technical leadership or mastery of a specific domain. ✅ Recognize and reward contributions publicly ↳ Celebrate individual and team achievements regularly, whether it's in company meetings or on social media. ✅ Offer flexibility, not just in schedules, but in approaches ↳ Everyone has a different rhythm. We let engineers choose their tools and workflows for maximum productivity. Is this the only way to build a strong team? Maybe not. But it creates a space where engineers feel valued, trusted, and motivated to grow—which makes them stay for the long run and contribute to something meaningful.
