The Menu: A Small Detail with a Big Impact When you enter a restaurant, the first thing you’re handed is the menu. It’s your introduction to the experience you are about to have—the first impression that sets the tone. Yet, so often, I see menus that are worn, stained, or just plain neglected. And worse, sometimes you are seated at a table that hasn’t been cleaned properly. If the menu is dirty, what does that say about the food and service to follow? When I asked my Instagram audience about it, over 120 people responded, all saying they care deeply about the appearance of a menu. It’s such a small thing, but it speaks volumes about the restaurant’s attention to detail and care for the guest experience. Unfortunately, it is something I’ve seen repeatedly here in Amsterdam. Why is it so overlooked? Clean, well-presented menus are one of the easiest steps toward offering better service. As I work to improve service standards here, my question is: Why not start with the simple things? A fresh menu, a clean table—these small steps are an investment in guest satisfaction that any restaurant can make.
