Great news!! My Capstone study was related to ESE training for teachers and the impact on students with learning exceptionalities. My study findings revealed the same about SWD performing better when in inclusive least restrictive classrooms as required by Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). From the article… ESE leaders say this will lead to greater educational experience for students; especially those in classrooms that include both students with disabilities and students without disabilities; also known as “inclusive” classrooms. According to ESE Director Amy Valentine, about 80% of students with disabilities who attend DCPS schools currently receive services in inclusive classrooms. “We want to keep students in those inclusive settings because we know that’s where they’re exposed to the most rigorous instruction,” said Valentine. “This environment mirrors what happens in adulthood, and it helps prepare children to be successful in adulthood.” Wallis agrees, saying this is backed up by substantial research. “Every single study that’s been done about inclusion indicates that when students with disabilities are included with their general education peers, both groups of students have higher outcomes,” said Wallis. “Not only with academic achievement, but also social and emotional skills.” Paring inclusion with training for educators is imperative. In addition to the benefits to students, Wallis said the training helps teachers have higher professional satisfaction.
Duval County Public Schools is proud to announce the receipt of a $4 million Education Innovation and Research grant. This significant funding will advance our commitment to providing equitable educational opportunities for students with disabilities. The grant aims to help educational institutions nationwide address learning loss and inequity. By enhancing training for educators and improving resources, this grant supports our mission to foster inclusive learning environments. It's a step towards academic recovery and long-term success for all students. 🔗 Read more about how this grant impacts our district's educational landscape on Team Duval News at https://ow.ly/ozK850QkHr8. #EducationInnovation #DuvalSchools #EIRGrant

"Should 'Yale' or 'jail' change the way we see others?" Six years ago today, this powerful question echoed through Jay Gillen's thought-provoking TEDx talk, where my early work was honored alongside the transformative power of youth-centered initiatives. Imagine a world where young voices aren't just heard, but amplified and compensated. Where youth don't just participate, but lead. This wasn't just a dream - it was our reality at the Baltimore Algebra Project (BAP). At BAP, we didn't just teach - we mobilized. We didn't just learn - we negotiated. We didn't just hope for change - we agitated for it. Following the inspiring model of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), we turned passion into action. Our achievements? They speak volumes: - Managing $400,000+ in annual contracts with CSOs and government organizations - Hosting the groundbreaking #FreeMindsFreePeople conference - Overseeing $3 million in grants - Leading nationwide demonstrations and school walk-outs - Successfully halting the construction of a $100 million youth jail But our true success wasn't measured in dollars or numbers. It was in the lives we touched, the systems we challenged, and the future we began to shape. Today, that spirit of commitment to community, diversity, and justice burns brighter than ever. The lessons from BAP - peer-to-peer learning, youth-led initiatives, challenging societal norms - continue to guide my approach to creating change. As we face global challenges, the need for youth leadership has never been greater. In education, community organizing, and policy-making, young voices are not just valuable - they're vital. Let's champion a future where every individual, regardless of background, can contribute meaningfully to their community. Where 'Yale' or 'jail' doesn't define potential. Where youth don't just have a seat at the table - they build the table. Together, let's challenge assumptions, uplift young voices, and create a more equitable, just society. The power of youth is limitless. The time for change is now. #YouthEmpowerment #CommunityOrganizing #YouthMobilizing #EducationEquity #Education4Liberation #SocialJustice -- https://lnkd.in/gSQwGV_R

New Year, New-ish Publication! ✍ ICYMI: Check out the Today's Students Coalition's Equity Now Policy Toolkit! This toolkit builds on the critical work of the TSC, and is designed to support our country’s advocates and leaders in addressing racial disparities in higher education through federal policy change. Built around four policy pillars, the toolkit presents 16 data-informed policy solutions that aim to create a racially equitable and more inclusive system of higher education by: 🤔 rethinking financial aid to serve today’s students better; 🏫 investing in institutions that have primarily served students of color and supported their success; 📊 improving and protecting data to advance racial equity; and 💲 modernizing the Pell Grant with a focus on racial equity. Read it and share here - https://bit.ly/3RDel6D —— As a personal aside, I am happy to share that this is the longest policy resource that I have created to-date and the first one that I had an opportunity to work on with a large group. That said, I'd like to give a huge shout out to the phenomenal members of the TSC's Racial Equity Subcommittee for their thoughtful ideas, feedback, and partnership as they truly made this resource what it is today - CAEL, Campaign for College Opportunity, Center for First-generation Student Success, Generation Hope, Higher Learning Advocates, Institute for Higher Education Policy, Jobs for the Future (JFF), Scholarship America, UPCEA, and Young Invincibles. I am looking forward to 2024 and the advocacy that will come from this toolkit in support of today's students! #racialequity #todaysstudents #federalpolicy #equitynow #highereducation

Throughout our nation's history, marginalized communities have stood in line – for their rights, for opportunities, for the chance to match their potential with their destiny. Education should not be another line they have to stand in. I'm inspired by the Missouri Equity Education Partnership and their upcoming event, "What's the Big IDEA?". They're bringing together voices from diverse backgrounds to share stories of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility. These stories remind us that behind every statistic, every policy debate, there are real lives, real struggles, and real triumphs. They challenge us to do better, to be better. As we listen to these stories, let's ask ourselves: How can we create a world where excellence in education is not a battle, but a birthright? #InclusiveEducation #WhatsBigIDEA For the speech: https://lnkd.in/gcMFGTAc
