Although it has been recently recognized as an official holiday in the United States, there's still an incredible amount of teaching that needs to be done around the history of #Juneteenth. When did you first learn about the holiday?

Thoughtful Patriotism For as man is the best of the animals when perfected, so he is the worst of all when sundered from law and justice.—Aristotle, Politics, Book I (around 350 BC) The Hillsdale K-12 civics program begins with a strong foundation in American history, geography, and the founding documents of the United States and eventually concludes with a deep examination of the moral, political, and philosophical underpinnings of the American Founding in grades 10-12. Through this program, we seek to foster a deep understanding of how our system of government came to be and how it operates. This knowledge contributes to an appreciation for the American experiment with self-government and a sense of responsibility for the role citizens ought to play in the civic life of the nation. We refer to the ability to meaningfully contemplate these matters as “thoughtful patriotism.”

Click on the link below to subscribe (for free) to The American Crisis, a new online magazine from The Foundation of American Ideals. The foundation was established by a group deeply concerned about declining understanding and appreciation of our shared history and traditions. That decline is reflected in our classrooms and our public life. We don’t agree with those who think our history is a grim story of oppression and exploitation. There has been plenty of both, but our history is also a story of accomplishment, courage, and sacrifice in the service of high ideals — independence, liberty, equality, natural and civil rights, and responsible citizenship. Our national identity is based on those ideals. They have shaped our shared history and will shape our future. Healthy conversation and reasoned debate about our past — what happened, how it shaped our nation, and how it touches our lives today — is an important part of public life. It cultivates appreciation of our accomplishments and helps us see our shortcomings. Our history should be a source of inspiration and national unity. https://lnkd.in/dgjA3qPf

Such an important point! This report is wide ranging and includes many radical (and in my opinion necessary and good) recommendations
With the launch of our #MathematicalFutures report this week, President of the Royal Society Sir Adrian Smith sets out why it's so important to reassess the way we teach this topic: https://lnkd.in/ekUHwzwf

A table needs a minimum of three legs for stability. And the fourth component, the table, becomes exactly that through its supporting legs. Check out the three points of our pedagogical triangle. These legs together provide the balance needed for whole-student education. #facinghistory
The pedagogical triangle is at the core of Facing History’s approach. This short video provides a concise overview of our approach to teaching and the three foundational questions we ask of ourselves and our students when teaching difficult moments in history.
