Some important considerations for making our campuses safe spaces for LGBTQ+ undergraduate and graduate students

Peter DeWitt, Ed.D., a former principal, teacher, consultant, and author of the Finding Common Ground blog for Education Week, addresses the issue of marginalized students, particularly focusing on LGBTQ students. His experience and doctoral research reveal that schools often fail to safeguard these students adequately, leading to bullying, harassment, and in some tragic cases, suicide. Key Points: 1. Marginalized Students: DeWitt emphasizes that while some students thrive in school, others, particularly LGBTQ students, feel unsafe and marginalized. 2. Research Findings: His research indicates that school administrators generally perform poorly in protecting LGBTQ students, with over 80% of these students experiencing bullying or harassment. 3. Impact: This neglect results in severe consequences, including the loss of students through dropping out or suicide. 4. Legislative Action: In New York, the Dignity for All Students Act mandates that school policies specifically address the needs of LGBTQ students, yet implementation remains a challenge. 5. Educational Inclusion: DeWitt advocates for integrating LGBTQ issues into the curriculum and ensuring school policies and codes of conduct are inclusive. He stresses the importance of representation in literature and discussions to make all students feel acknowledged and supported. 6. Personal Motivation: DeWitt's motivation is partly drawn from his personal experience of feeling different due to his father’s early death and the lack of relatable narratives in his education. As a principal, he worked to ensure all students felt represented and engaged. His work, including the book Dignity for All Students, focuses on creating safe and inclusive environments for LGBTQ students by promoting awareness and implementing supportive policies.

May 3 is the Freedom to Learn National Day of Action, a day of advocacy for inclusive education and young people’s freedom to read, learn and build a just future. Our collective responsibility is to counter disinformation, uplift honest history and engage our communities to serve all children. To strengthen our democracy, we must resist campaigns that unjustly aim to ban books and censor the experiences and perspectives of LGBTQ+ people and Black, Indigenous and other people of color. The Campus Pride Index uses several criteria to rank how friendly participating colleges and universities are for LGBTQ students. UMBC does not currently appear on the list but several other Maryland universities do, including College Park and Towson. Support Services: Establishing support services such as LGBTQ+ student groups, counseling services, and gender-neutral restrooms provide necessary support and community for LGBTQ+ individuals. 4. Inclusive Curriculum: Integrating LGBTQ+ history, literature, and contributions into the curriculum matters because diverse perspectives enrich the learning experience for all students. 5. Visible Support: Displaying LGBTQ+ inclusive symbols such as Pride flags or Safe Space stickers throughout the campus signify support and create a welcoming atmosphere. 6. This Pride Month, let's highlight the significant strides made in instructional design in the Philippines, particularly in fostering diversity and inclusion for LGBTQ+ students. - Integrating LGBTQ+ histories and issues into education ensures all students feel represented and valued. - Anti-bullying programs and inclusive policies protect LGBTQ+ students, creating a supportive atmosphere. - Educators are equipped with the skills to effectively support LGBTQ+ students. - Online resources and virtual safe spaces offer additional support for LGBTQ+ learners. As we close out Pride Month, there’s new research we just released with Theirworld among LGBTQ+ youth. The findings are discouraging: • 52% of LGBTQ+ youth face bullying • 38% don’t feel schools are safe • 35% have missed school due to bullying Learning in a safe educational environment is a fundamental right that all children deserve.
