7% of residents in long-term care and assisted living settings are younger than 65 years: a significant number of residents in long-term care (LTC) and assisted living (AL) settings are 18 to 64 years old, well below the average resident age of 83 years. Younger residents are more likely to have developmental or severe physical disability, chronic disease, and mental health conditions. The age- and illness-related differences make their #MentalHealth and well-being needs distinct. While the new standard CSA Z2004:24, Mental health and well-being in long-term care (LTC) and assisted living (AL) settings, addresses the needs of residents of all age groups, it also includes recommendations focused on younger residents. The standard https://bit.ly/3xWFXN7 outlines considerations for programming, activities, and relationships that can support the mental health and well-being of younger residents. The standard also highlights innovative practices that can be applied to the care of younger residents.

The pandemic has taken a particularly heavy toll on the #physical and #mental health of elderly and young people. To better respond to their needs, the Federal Council has adopted two reports outlining lessons for improving the #management of pandemics and other future crises. Regarding the #elderly and residents of nursing homes, individual freedom and self-determination in particular need to be taken into account more fully, so that differentiated measures can be put in place. As far as #young people and people living alone are concerned, the Federal Council attaches particular importance to early intervention, accessible support services, the protection of mental health in education and training, and the enhancement of digital skills to reduce the harmful effects of digital content. Yesterday, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy released a new advisory on mental health for parents and caregivers. The report highlights a significant finding: 48% of parents say that most days their stress is completely overwhelming, compared to 26% among other adults. As a pediatric PA in outpatient care, I see the impact of this stress daily. Offering reassurance and grace to parents and caregivers is essential. We must equip them with educational tools and resources because a child cannot thrive if their caregiver or parent isn’t. The role parents play in their children’s lives cannot be overstated. Research shows that children’s mental, emotional, and physical health is closely tied to the well-being of their parents. Stress and mental health challenges in parents can directly influence a child’s development and overall well-being. As healthcare providers, we play a crucial role in supporting parents so that they can, in turn, support their children. The Surgeon General's Advisory offers actionable recommendations on how to support parents and caregivers through policy changes, community programs, and individual actions. The report states that 48% of parents say that most days their stress is completely overwhelming, compared to 26% among other adults. We know that parents/caregivers of children with medical complexities face uniquely stressful circumstances. That's why children’s hospitals and health systems provide resources and connections between families facing similar medical challenges, so they don’t feel so alone. The Surgeon General's Advisory offers actionable recommendations on how to support parents and caregivers through policy changes, community programs, and individual actions. 📰 Read the article: https://lnkd.in/eCpa69ew 🌟 In the tapestry of #MentalHealth, the concept of "Recovery" encapsulates a blend of aspiration and hope. Each individual's path is uniquely crafted, weaving stories of triumph, resilience, and unexpected victories. 💙 Why is understanding #recovery in Serious and Persistent Mental Illness (#SPMI) crucial? In #NewYork State alone, 846 thousand adults, approximately 5.4% of its population, navigate the challenges of SPMI. This goes beyond statistics, affecting #families, #communities, and the state budget through #homelessness and Medicaid. SPMI encompasses diagnoses like #Schizophrenia, #BipolarDisorder, #MajorDepression, #PTSD, and severe #OCD. 🌈 Unlike visible ailments, the #RecoveryJourney in SPMI resembles the aftermath of a stroke—uncertain, with progress concealed within the individual's experience. Aiming for personal potential, individuals face a lifetime of ups and downs, with relapses punctuating their progress. Recovery is an ongoing story with an open-ended destination. 🏛️ New York State's Office of Mental Health offers a lifeline through a spectrum of "recovery-oriented services." #Crisis services, hospital admissions, day programs, varying levels of #HousingSupport, and #CommunityBased care constitute the tools empowering individuals in their recovery journey. Families play a pivotal role by familiarizing themselves with these services, advocating for their loved ones with SPMI. 🙏 Humility is paramount in SPMI prognoses. The journey's trajectory remains uncertain, demanding collaboration between clinicians, patients, and families. Setbacks are inevitable, but collective #perseverance, regaining lost ground, and fostering #hope pave the way forward. "Recovery: An Ongoing Process, Not a Destination" By Barry B. Perlman, MD 📰 Read the article: https://lnkd.in/eCpa69ew

Between 2019 and 2023, the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS) made a series of reforms to reduce the number of children in congregate care from more than 1,000 to fewer than 400. In a new case study, Addressing Upstream Factors: Reducing the Number of Michigan Children in Congregate Care, we detail how the MDHHS, with support from the Harvard Kennedy School Government Performance Lab, developed and implemented solutions around two upstream points of intervention that contributed to the sustained decline in congregate care: 1 - Strengthen children’s access to high-quality, community-based behavioral health services, which may help to prevent escalating behaviors that can precede placement breakdown and entry to congregate care, and 2 - Increase placements with and supports for kin caregivers, where children experience more stability, fewer placement moves, and better behavioral and mental health outcomes compared with children in non-kin settings. In the face of rising diagnoses of #autism spectrum disorder among youth, an increasing number of #adolescents are transitioning to adult medical care each year. This #transition poses challenges due to varying #communication, adaptive functioning, and #social skills among #autistic individuals, often compounded by additional #MentalHealth and physical conditions. Addressing these complexities, #healthcare providers urgently need comprehensive transition programs to ensure seamless continuity of care, tailored to meet the unique needs of autistic young adults as they navigate the healthcare system and beyond. “Building a Healthcare Transition Program for Autistic Patients Entering Adulthood” By Carrin E. Former President and CEO at Behavioral Health Link | Future of Behavioral Care Solutions | 988 Crisis Response | Transformational Leadership
Despite strong financial investments in its intensive mobile treatment teams, a recent audit revealed that the results have been less than ideal. For example, fewer than 1/3 of the people whose cases were reviewed by auditors regularly took their prescribed medications and one in four people never met with a psychiatrist or nurse from a treatment team. A strong mobile response team can be a game-changer for a community's #BehavioralHealth, especially for the homeless population. However, NYC's approach shows how important it is to set clear standards to measure these program's effectiveness if we want to drive real results. #MentalHealth #MobileCrisisResponse
