Sub-Saharan Africa is home to more people with albinism (PAWs) than anywhere else in the world. Due to the intense exposure to UV rays, to them, protection from the sun is a matter of life and death. In a long-term partnership with the NGO Beyond Suncare , we have managed to formulate a sunscreen that meets the myriad requirements of people with albinism. However, this is "only" one way to improve the quality of life and the level of safety for people with albinism. That’s why we have signed the global #CallToAction to end the skin cancer epidemic in persons with albinism initiated by the Global Albinism Alliance, The International League of Dermatological Societies , GlobalSkin - International Alliance of Dermatology Patient Organizations, European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, and other national and international organizations. 👉 Share the Call to Action and help us make a difference! #ActionOnSkinCancerAndAlbinism #Albinism #AlbinismAwareness #SkinCancer #SkinHealthForAll #TailoredSunProtection

📣 Global Call to Action! Did you know? In many regions of the world – mainly in the tropics – a large proportion of persons with albinism (PWAs) develop skin cancer before the age of 30, with some even developing in childhood. Through a series of calls to action, we are advocating for increased access to healthcare services, the inclusion of sunscreen on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) list of essential medicines, the implementation of educational campaigns to raise awareness, and the promotion of protective measures to safeguard the health and well-being of PWAs in these vulnerable regions. Learn more here: 👉 https://bit.ly/3xPETua Join the campaign to PETITION the WHO to re-add sunscreen to the list of essential medicines, sign here: 👉 https://bit.ly/3Vm6nPM #ActionOnSkinCancerAndAlbinism #SkinHealthForAll #AlbinismAwareness Photo: Patricia Willocq – White Ebony Global Albinism Alliance The International League of Dermatological Societies GlobalSkin - International Alliance of Dermatology Patient Organizations European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology

Still not convinced that gut health matters? New research, published in Jama Dermatology, found significant differences in gut microbiome 🦠 profiles between people who had melanoma and who did not. There were also differences between those who had early and later stage disease. Conventional healthcare likes to separate the skin from the gut from the brain etc., but evidence keeps piling up that all of these things relate AND that the microbiome could very well be at the center of it all. ➡️ Whether we’re dealing with a skin issue, hormonal changes, or emotional concerns…one core strategy in functional medicine is to help everyone optimize gut and microbiome health. This study 👆 is just more confirmation of why. While topical corticosteroids (TCSs) are widely employed for managing inflammatory skin conditions due to their efficacy, recent research highlights a potential concern, underscoring the importance of caution when utilizing topical corticosteroids, particularly in susceptible populations like women and young individuals. Clinicians should be vigilant about these potential side effects, emphasizing the need for careful consideration in prescribing TCSs. The study's findings, published in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, serve as a valuable reference for healthcare practitioners in navigating the balance between the utility of TCSs and the associated risks. Skin Cancer in Persons with Albinism: ✔️ has devastating health, social and economic consequences ✔️ is mainly prevalent among impoverished communities in tropical areas ✔️ has an epidemiology tightly related to environmental conditions (exposure to sun radiation) ✔️ is absent from the global health agenda ✔️ has very limited resources and is almost ignored by global funding agencies ✔️ perpetuates a cycle of poor educational outcomes and limited professional opportunities ✔️ is associated with stigma and social exclusion ✔️ ... 👆 all of these characteristics are shared among Neglected Tropical Diseases. More info about NTDs 👉 https://lnkd.in/dCKaHsCV #ActionOnSkinCancerAndAlbinism
Action 2️⃣ 👉 The World Health Assembly (#WHA) should recognize the long-lasting crisis of Skin Cancer in PWAs and address it through an ad-hoc program similar to the one dedicated to “the Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases” (#NTDs).
