If anyone challenges the claim that Israel is an apartheid state, feel free to point them to this article I wrote earlier this year: https://lnkd.in/d_gMcy6Z. There are much more definitive statements (see Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and Israel's own human rights organization B'Tselem) but I tried to make this a short, accessible, and factual summary about why Palestinians are not just culturally, but also legally, second class citizens in Israel.

21 October is celebrated as Africa Human Rights Day, in commemoration of the entry into force of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on 21 October 1986. The Charter is the foundation of the African Human Rights System. Many strides have been made since. Many countries on the continent moved to political pluralism. South Africa ended the unjust Apartheid system. However, many abuses and violations remain, particularly where wars have broken out. Rwanda's genocide of 1994 and ongoing wars in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Sudan readily come to mind. Despite what appears to be a mixed record, the goal of advancing the human rights, peace, and democracy agenda must remain on course. On this day, we reflect on the sacrifices of those who fight to uphold and promote human rights and dignity. Geneva International Centre for Justice (GICJ), in collaboration with Association Ma’onah for Human Rights and Immigration, International-Lawyers.org, International Organization for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, and Children’s Right to Healthcare, organised a special side event held on 28 March 2024, addressing the issue of Human rights violations against women and children in the context of Palestine under the Israeli occupation. Ms. Albanese discussed the perpetration of genocide by Israel in the Gaza Strip since 7 October 2023, and the conditions of the occupation long before it. She noted that Israel's assaults on Gaza had caused substantial casualties, in addition to imposing terrible conditions of forced starvation upon civilians. Ms. Albanese also addressed the terrible toll of the assault on women and children of Gaza, who will bear the burden of rebuilding the fabric of Palestine in the years to come. Ms. Shadeed also delivered powerful remarks on the experiences of Palestinian women under the occupation. She underscored the sexual abuse and exploitation they have suffered from Israeli forces, who have routinely flouted international norms in their attempts to commit genocide. Both speakers called on the international community to cease its tolerance of Israel’s crimes against humanity, denouncing the complicity of Western powers in the ongoing assault. It's heartening to see that thanks to the hard work and efforts of activist manar alzubedy alongside Iraq's Roma communities, the Iraqi government is finally starting to take notice of the unique challenges faced by Iraqi Roma. We stand in solidarity with Iraqi Roma and hope to see the Iraqi government make the legislative and policy changes necessary to eradicate discrimination and address the structural violence which currently disproportionately affects Iraqi Roma. #Iraq #Roma #minorities #society #humanrights https://lnkd.in/gqG8Uh29

On March 21st, South Africa commemorates Human Rights Day. This day serves as a reminder of the tragic event that took place in 1960 when 69 people were killed during a peaceful demonstration against apartheid pass laws. We honor the sacrifices made by those who fought against injustice and reflect on the importance of human rights. Let us commit to building a better future by nurturing a culture that upholds human dignity and promotes respect for basic human rights for all. Together, we can work towards a united, non-racial, non-sexist, and prosperous society. #HumanRightsDay #SouthAfrica #JusticeForAll

At AfricanDefenders and DefendDefenders, we understand that transparency and inclusivity are vital for advancing human rights in Africa. That's why we're proud to join forces with other civil society organizations and National Human Rights Institutions in calling for a more open and participatory process in nominating and selecting members of African Union human rights mechanisms. As we gear up for the July 2024 elections to fill vacancies in the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, we must prioritize transparency and inclusivity to ensure the integrity of the process. Read our statement and learn how you can join the initiative:https://lnkd.in/duCiff6S #HumanRights #Africa #Transparency #Inclusivity #CivilSociety

ADVOCATE- MEMBER OF THE EASTERN CAPE SOCIETY OF ADVOCATES, BHISHO BAR, GENERAL COUNCIL OF THE BAR & THE PAN AFRICAN BAR ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AFRICA (PABASA).
As we celebrate Human Rights Day, I cannot help but zoom into the preamble of our Constitution. The most significant aspect of the preamble is that it sets the context for doing justice by recognising the injustices of colonial and apartheid regimes. Unlike most constitutions, it honours all persons who fought the unjust regimes to attain justice and freedoms and pays tribute to all persons who worked hard to build and develop South Africa. Most importantly, it seeks heal the divisions of the past and establish a society based on democratic values, social justice and fundamental human rights; improve the quality of life of all citizens and free the potential of each person; and build a united and democratic South Africa able to take its rightful place as a sovereign state in the family of nations.
