Today we honor Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It marks the day, June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. Juneteenth celebrations often include gatherings with family and friends, parades, music, food, and reflections on African American history and culture. It's a significant day for recognizing the struggles and achievements of African Americans throughout history and for promoting racial equality and justice. In recent years, there have been increasing calls to make Juneteenth a national holiday in the United States to acknowledge its importance in American history and to promote awareness and understanding of the ongoing fight for racial equality.
