Several of Europe’s most powerful countries implored Brussels to set “an ambitious climate target for 2040” — adding crucial pressure ahead of an upcoming plan. The plea, detailed in a letter obtained by POLITICO, breaks the dam on the silence that has so far prevailed among EU capitals as the European Commission prepared its 2040 climate roadmap, which is expected to include support for deep carbon emission cuts. “The need for ambitious global climate action has never been more evident,” reads the letter, which has support from 11 countries, including the EU’s two largest economies, Germany and France, as well as other large or wealthy countries like the Netherlands and Spain. https://lnkd.in/epH4XBi2 #euclimatepact #climatetargets

A powerful letter on the upcoming EU 2040 climate target, signed by 36 academics and scientists, 29 NGOs/business associations, 23 companies and nine research organisations. It shows a broad consensus advocating for three separate targets for 2040: 1) emission reductions 2) land-based carbon sequestration 3) permanent carbon removal We'll see how the European Commission suggests dividing the targets on 6 February when their proposal is scheduled to be published.
