"Being a father to two daughters in their late teens has been the most important focus of my life. Presenting on University Radio gave me a love of music of all genres which has formed a soundtrack to my life. Maintaining a strong golf handicap was where many years of leisure time with friends have been spent. "Starting out on a graduate programme with Britvic Soft Drinks in a variety of quality, product development and manufacturing roles I eventually set up a brand new team responsible for supply quality assurance. I moved to Twinings, part of Associated British Foods, where I led the central technical, quality, and regulatory teams. Eventually taking up a role on the Executive Committee for Tea Supply where I led quality teams across China, India, Poland, and the UK, secured safe and quality assured raw materials and led a regulatory team which supported commercial teams across our global markets to ensure compliant labelling of products. This was characterised by international collaboration, minimal quality issues in market, and significant improvements in consumer quality measures". 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙧𝙤𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙉𝙚𝙞𝙡 𝙖𝙙𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙫𝙖𝙡𝙪𝙚 𝙞𝙣? Venturing into the unfamiliar is both daunting and exhilarating experience. For me, this journey began when I stepped into the world of food processing and manufacturing, a field far from my previous work as Digital Marketing Project Manager. Today, I am produ to share my story of learning, growth, and continuous discovery in this dynamic industry. My career had always been rooted into IT and Marketing, one where I was comfortable and confident. The decision to transition into food processing and manufacturing was a leap of faith. I knew it would require starting from scratch, acquiring new skills, and understanding a whole new landscapre. However, the challenge excited me, I saw it as an opportunity to expand my horizons and embrace the unknown. The first few months were a whirldwind of information. From understanding the basics of food and safety and quality to grasping the intricacies of production processes, there was so much to learn. I took Food Handling under Victoria Do Food Safety. Every day presented a new challenge and a chance to learn something new. I vividly remember my initial the understading of HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) principles and the complexities of food microbiology. It was overwhelming, but also incredibly rewarding. Theory alone wasn't enough. To truly grasp the nuances of food processing, I immersed myself in hands-on experience and I am lucky to have my managers to give me opportunities to learn the process. I spent time on the floor, observing and participating in various stages of the production. This practical exposure was invaluable. It allowed me to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world applications, giving me a deeper appreciation for the meticulous processes involved in ensuring food quality and safety. Every industry has its challenges, and food processing is no exception. There were moments of frustration and doubt. especially when faced with complex priblems or steep learning curves. However, these challenges fueled my determunation. I learned to approach problems systematically, seeking innovative solutions and collaborating with experienced professionals. Each obstacle overcome was a testatment to my resilience and adaptability. Looking back, I am immensly proud of my journey. What started as a venture into the unknown has become a passion and a career I deeply cherish. I have transformed from a novice to a knoledgeable professional, contributing to an industry that plays a crucial role in our daily lives. The skills I've acquired and the experiences I've gained are a testatment to the power of perseverance and the willingness to embrance the change. My journey has been remakable adventure of learning and growth. It has taught me the value of stepping out of my comfort zone and the rewards that come with embracing new challenges. 🤢 𝐒𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐨𝐟 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬? What I learned the hard way in my first 20 years in quality, the solution I found, and what I've been coaching quality managers on already for the last 12 years. When investigating 🔎 a quality or food safety incident, you will often find that the reason why it happened is that 𝐚 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐥𝐲, or a validated process was not followed (which is actually 𝐚𝐧 𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞). Having a change management process in place, as we always request during a client’s supplier audit, is not enough: a system is as good as its weakest link 🔗. But what is that weakest link in a change management process 🤷🏼♂️? During management training at Campbell's I was introduced to 𝐀𝐃𝐊𝐀𝐑: a model for change in business by Jeffrey M. Hiatt, and found the solution to better change management and thus in 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬. The model consists of 5 elements: 𝐀wareness of the need to change: are people aware why the change is being made, and the risk of not changing? Do they know the internal and external drivers that created the need for change, as well as “what’s in it for me.”? This last element is crucial, as people will step into the action to move away from the pain they have, or to go to a more pleasant situation. 𝐃esire to support and participate in the change: are people willing to support and engage in the change? Their choice is again determined by their personal situation, as well as their individual intrinsic motivators. 𝐊nowledge of how to change: do people have the right and sufficient knowledge, information, training and education to know how to change? When they don’t have a clue what is needed to make the change happen, nothing will be done. 𝐀bility to implement required skills and behaviours: Can people turn that knowledge into action? Ability is achieved when the capability to implement the change at the required performance levels is demonstrated. 𝐑einforcement to sustain the change: There are external and internal factors that sustain change. External reinforcements could include recognition, rewards and for sure celebrations that are tied to the realisation of the change: celebrate every (small) success! Internal reinforcements could be internal satisfaction with the achievement or other benefits derived from the change on a personal level. For a change to be successful, all 5 elements need to be present in this exact order. What is the most common weakest link in the process in your experience? This will be my first post ever since i opened LINKEDIN. I'm grateful for the little growth so far. I graduated last year as Food Scientist and i'm currently a corp member even though i never had the opportunity to serve in an organisation related to my discipline which i wanted badly because I needed that real life experience which i never really had in school. I wasn't happy about it at first but I had to just accept the reality and hope for the best. But in all I'm still grateful for where I am today. My journey as a corp member will come to an end in two months time and i'm so scared of the reality about the real world out there after NYSC. But i believe every journey start with a step and I hope I will be able to achieve some of my goals in few years time as I focus on building myself and my personal growth. As a Food Scientist, Food enthusiast and a Food Analyst, I feel I should refreshen my brain and share from what I learnt so far as a Food Scientist, and I decided to pick an interest in FOOD QUALITY CONTROL. Food Quality Control refers to the processes and procedures in place to ensure that food products meet specific standards and requirements. This includes: 1.Raw material inspection: Verifying the quality of ingredients and materials used in food production. 2.Process control: Monitoring and controlling food processing conditions, such as temperature, time, and humidity. 3.Product testing: Conducting chemical, physical, and microbiological tests to ensure food safety and quality. 4.Packaging inspection: Verifying the integrity and quality of food packaging. 5.Storage and distribution monitoring: Ensuring proper storage and distribution conditions to prevent contamination and spoilage. 6.Pest control: Implementing measures to prevent pest infestations in food production and storage areas. 7.Cleaning and sanitation: Maintaining a clean and sanitized environment for food production and processing. 8. Employee training: Educating employees on food safety and quality control practices. 9. Audits and certifications_: Conducting regular audits and obtaining certifications (e.g., HACCP, ISO 22000) to ensure compliance with food quality and safety standards. 10. Continuous improvement: Regularly reviewing and improving food quality control processes to ensure the highest standards are met. By implementing these measures, food manufacturers and producers can ensure the quality and safety of their products, reducing the risk of contamination and foodborne illness. Glad to say that I’ve completed the virtual food scientist job experience provided by Year 13 in Partnership with MESSINA (one of Australias largest gelato and desserts sellers). This job experience had a focus on the importance of quality assurance with the roles of quality assurance managers in the food industry. Quality assurance staff mainly have 4 duties which include: 1. Ensuring food safety: Assessing all production processes from acquiring raw materials to the packaging of products which assessments involve temperature checks, checking storage conditions and sanitation processes to ensure maximal food safety. 2. Maintaining quality standards: Making sure that recipes are followed correctly and that ingredients are up to high standards. This would involve taste testing. 3. Regulatory compliance: Staying up to date with national and international food safety regulations is a must! Staff would carry out documentation, inspections and audits to make sure regulations are met. Some duties involve labelling, allergen documentation, and other legislative tasks. 4. Problem solving: Given that the food industry is fast paced and that challenges can always arise, problem solving is empirical. For instance, should there be a problem during quality testing, you may have to resort to making changes to production processes, whether it be in adding, removing, or substituting ingredients for alternatives or making changes to cooking processes. Let's have a throwback because it's Thursday 😊 Most times I have lots of thoughts in my head but the problem is putting them out... Just the other day I was thinking about the first day I heard about the word quality control and quality assurance. It was during my Intern year which was in 2019. I remember that year when I joined newly, my supervisor (Temitope Aduroja ) would have a class with me and the next thing assignments 😅. And as a good student, I will bombard my notes with stories 😎. One of the numerous assignments was differentiating between a Quality Control officer and a Quality Assurance officer. I know this is not new to some people but we still confuse them. Sometimes it is not people's fault, it is just the Job description 🤷 These two officers play distinct yet COMPLEMENTARY roles in ensuring the safety and quality of food products in the industry... "Read again and take note of the word in capital letters" Below are some specific examples that I have prepared to illustrate the differences between a quality control officer and a quality assurance officer in the food industry: Responsibilities ✨ - Q.C.O.: Conducting visual inspections and sensory evaluations of finished food products to ensure they meet established quality standards. For instance, a quality control officer may inspect packaged biscuits for proper appearance, texture, and taste. - Q.A.O.: Developing and implementing HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) plans to prevent food contamination throughout the production process. For example, a quality assurance officer might design and oversee the implementation of a plan to prevent cross-contamination between raw and cooked ingredients in a food processing facility. Scope✨ - Q.C.O.: Conducting periodic checks on production equipment to ensure they are calibrated and functioning properly. For example, a quality control officer might routinely calibrate temperature probes in ovens to ensure accurate baking temperatures. - Q.A.O.: Implementing supplier quality management programs to ensure that raw materials and ingredients meet specified quality standards before they are used in production. For instance, a quality assurance officer might establish criteria for evaluating the quality of incoming produce from suppliers and conduct regular audits to verify compliance. What else did I miss?
