Now Live 🎙️ Julian de Metz, Founding Director of dMFK. "There's a poetry that not in a building that not everybody gets" ✏️How he got started and set up dMFK ? 🔮 What future project would you be excited about? In the world of design, the focus often shifts towards the aesthetics, materials, and technical specifications of a space. However, the true essence of great design lies in its ability to cater to the human experience. In this insightful podcast episode we dive deep into the design philosophy of Julian, the founding director of the acclaimed architecture firm dMFK. Julian, a third-generation architect, trained at Moshe Safdie Associates in Boston and ORMS Architects in London before collaborating with his father on London projects. In 1998, he founded de Metz Architects, later forming dMFK with Paul Forbes and Ben Knight to ensure strong director involvement in all projects. He specializes in challenging contexts and renovation, focusing on community consultation and the planning process. Currently, he oversees various large projects, including student housing and heritage restoration. Julian is also an RIBA external examiner and a part-time lecturer at Westminster University. On the latest episode of Ontario Association of Architects' Architecturally Speaking podcast, Barry Hobin discusses the transformative relationship between water and urban design. Highlighting projects like 115 Echo and Lansdowne Park, Barry reflects on how thoughtful integration with waterways enhances public spaces and fosters deeper community connections. As Barry shared, ““I think what most people would like to see happen at Lansdowne is a greater connection to the Canal, and so, actually the notion of bringing water from the Canal into the Park so you could canoe into the Park, that you could actually waterboard. There are some cases along the canal system—Brown’s Inlet, and Patterson Creek being one of them where you can actually skate into an outlet from the canal, and people really connect with that sort of visceral connection with water, I’ll put it that way.” Listen to the full podcast here: https://lnkd.in/eBhxdKf8 #Ottawa #Lansdowne #Architecture #Hobin #Canal

If you didn't hear this in late November and have a moment this Christmas, do listen to us in the ZERO AMBITIONS PODCAST: Experiments in low-carbon retrofit for a high-status building (with a basement). This episode is all about the lessons learned in carrying out a low-carbon retrofit. Natalie Black (Enbee Architecture + Design) and Toby McLean (AlltEnvironmental Structural Engineers) joined us to talk through their experiments and experiences on the renovation of a derelict house in Muswell Hill, London that was shortlisted for the Architects Journal Retrofit and Reuse awards this year. In episode 4 of Going Green (a Spaces Podcast story) I explore the evolution of architectural styles from historic to modern to postmodern. It begins with how buildings throughout history have reflected their region and responded to societal changes. The episode examines the emergence of modernism as a reaction to World War I and the socio-economic aspects of elaborate historic architecture. The Bauhaus movement and the international style are highlighted as a major branch of modernism. The episode also explores the rise of postmodern architecture, which emphasized diversity, historical references, and contextual significance. Link in comments.

"We’ve been recognized for our affordable architecture, but we never think about it as affordable architecture. We think about it as architecture that's every bit as deserving of care as a museum or a country villa." - Donald Powers Tune in to an insightful conversation between UNION founder Don Powers and Peter Miller, host of the Traditional Building Magazine podcast series, Building Tradition. In this recently released episode, Don shares Union's philosophy and approach to the design of affordable housing. Put simply, with affordable housing we do not experiment, we refine. The context is what matters, and it matters most to future residents who have no voice in the design process – and who will be the most impacted by the design decisions. What they really want is to live in a place like everyone else, not in an architectural experiment. https://lnkd.in/ezSA7cQh

Growing architecture: nature, time and the unknown 🌿 ⏳ Living structures demonstrate remarkable resilience in extreme conditions. In our previous episode, we explored the incredible living root bridges of Meghalaya, India. WHAT IF we could adopt this innovative approach to create resilient, living buildings and cities? ✨ Meet Ferdinand Ludwig, a Professor of Green Technologies in Landscape Architecture and the Director of the Research Group Baubotanik at the Technical University of Munich. He co-founded OLA – Office for Living Architecture in Stuttgart, Germany, and is the author of the book “Growing Architecture – How to Design and Build with Trees.” Growing architecture is an innovative approach that integrates living plants into architectural designs, addressing ecological issues such as climate change adaptation and promoting sustainable living environments. This concept challenges traditional design methodologies by incorporating elements like growth, decay, chance, and probability into the creation of resilient and beautiful structures. In our conversation, we explore the following questions: 🌿 What inspired the concept of Baubotanik, and what challenges arise when designing with nature? 🌿 How can we adopt a mindset that looks beyond our own lifetimes when planning and building structures? 🌿 What are the three approaches to time in the context of living architecture? 🌿 How can we understand cities as living systems and the concept of inhabitable forests? ▶ Tune in to this episode to discover how Ferdinand Ludwig's groundbreaking work is reshaping our understanding of architecture and encouraging us to design with nature, time, and the unknown in mind.
