Thanks for this share, Kristy! Excited that Perkins&Will’s architects enjoy repurposing buildings. When I was designing in Vancouver with Cobalt (now Introba), we always appreciated working on projects with this company. It was when I got back to Cali in 2012 and chose my energy engineering job at Siemens that I discovered it’s our existing building stock that is the 🐷 our energy grid needs to feed. The talk I went to at the Vancouver Public Library in 2006 was only the tip of the iceberg 🧊 with my understanding of the role buildings play in human energy consumption. At the time, it was 50% of our energy resources. Yikes! 😱 Repurposing our existing buildings so they serve what we currently need is an excellent way of managing our resources on 🌍 Spaceship Earth. The biological object we build on (and with) has her limits. If we aren’t mindful with our growth moving forward, she might just kick us off! 🥾 #PlanetaryPriorities #EthicalEngineering #ResourceFullThoughts #ErthlyIdeas
One of Perkins&Will favorite types of projects is adaptive reuse. Here are a few reasons why we love it: 1) Sustainability: Repurposing existing structures reduces waste and environmental impact. 2) Preserving Character: It maintains the existing fabric of a place while introducing new, innovative uses within. 3) Technical Challenges: These projects are technically demanding, and we thrive on overcoming such challenges. 4) Unique Quality: Older, sometimes historic buildings offer an intangible quality of space that is difficult to describe but unmistakable when experienced. Read Matt Covall, AIA, LEED AP piece on creative adaptations to learn about the various ways we have repurposed spaces. We will continue to champion these types of projects for all the reasons above. Stay tuned for more on adaptive reuse and creative adaptations throughout the City and beyond. #adaptivereuse #repurpose #reframe #design https://lnkd.in/g4m3YmW8

🌿 Excited to share the core idea of my master's thesis: "Growing Beyond Sustainability - A Regenerative Approach", for a high-rise building proposal in Philadelphia's Center City! 🌆 Utilizing mass timber frame structures, this project champions sustainability and carbon efficiency by storing carbon rather than emitting it. The design includes modular volumes for adaptable use, extending building lifespans and minimizing environmental impacts. This regenerative design philosophy creates dynamic, enduring spaces that evolve with our needs, setting a new standard for eco-friendly architecture. Check out the video to see the transition from the conceptual phase to how the building responds to weather conditions and adapts to various uses over time. #MassTimber #RegenerativeDesign #SustainableArchitecture #CarbonEfficiency #InnovativeBuilding #GreenBuilding #Philadelphia #HighRise #UrbanDevelopment #EcoFriendly #ArchitecturalInnovation #FutureCities

When I embarked on my journey in the Australian Design Practices, I encountered a very common approach that starkly contrasted with my European roots. The prevailing notion often leaned towards complete demolition, wiping the slate clean with each renovation or addition. It left me pondering the feasibility for 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘀 to achieve any good results. My transition from Brisbane to Sydney only reinforced the prevalence of this "𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁-𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺-𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵" 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵. The norm was to embark on projects with wide-scale demolitions, which raised questions about cost-effectiveness and sustainability. 𝗜𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲, 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀, 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀, 𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘂𝗽𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀. It's a mindset that priorities the preservation of existing valuable elements and integrates them into fresh narratives. Enter Crush Architecture, where I made a deliberate choice to pivot towards a European approach that now forms the cornerstone of my practice. You might wonder, "Why opt for this approach when starting a new appears simpler?" There are compelling reasons. Firstly, it's a financial boon for clients. By 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝘄𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 while ensuring spaces align with their needs. Secondly, 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲. It transcends eco-friendly materials to encompass waste reduction and resource efficiency. Third, designing with existing valuable elements 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 that makes outstanding architecture without need of unlimited budget. Here the impact of this approach on any of our projects: ✅ No overcapitalisation ✅ Expedited construction ✅ Streamlined approval processes ✅ Capital freed up for the client's business, their children education, or cherished pursuits. This is the essence of my approach at Crush Architecture - a blend of sustainability, pragmatism, and fiscal wisdom. It's more than a design idea; it's a philosophy that unlocks opportunities and infuses tangible value into every project. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this approach, whether you agree or disagree. #CrushArchitecture #EuropeanArchitecture #Sustainability #ArchitecturalPhilosophy #Smartcities #heritage #sydneyarchitecture #terracehouses #sydneyhomeowners #sydneydevelopers #australianarchitecture

Domespaces is the leading brand of outdoor life domes in the USA and around the world. Our domes are used by everyday people, large corporations, party planners, government agencies, and celebrities. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Domes are increasingly recognized as a great investment for several reasons. Firstly, their unique architectural design offers numerous practical benefits, such as increased energy efficiency, enhanced durability, and resistance to natural disasters like hurricanes and earthquakes. This makes them attractive options for residential, commercial, and institutional buildings, providing long-term cost savings and peace of mind for investors. Additionally, domes are versatile structures that can be customized to suit a variety of purposes, from residential homes and community centers to sports facilities and educational institutions. Their spacious interior and open floor plan offer endless possibilities for creative use of space, making them appealing to a wide range of tenants and users. Furthermore, domes have a relatively low environmental impact compared to traditional building methods, as they often require fewer materials and resources to construct. This aligns with the growing trend towards sustainable and eco-friendly development, attracting environmentally-conscious investors and tenants. As American architect Buckminster Fuller famously said, “The best way to predict the future is to design it." This quote encapsulates the forward-thinking approach embodied by dome construction, which prioritizes innovation, efficiency, and resilience in building design. By investing in domes, individuals and organizations can contribute to the advancement of sustainable building practices while also reaping the financial rewards of a smart and forward-looking investment. Dome Spaces Barry Sendach Richard DiPilla #DomeInvestments, #InnovativeArchitecture, and #SustainableDevelopment, you can engage with others interested in the potential of dome construction and showcase the benefits of investing in this innovative building technology. Together, let's build a brighter future with domes as the cornerstone of sustainable and resilient communities. Hopefully you enjoy my posts and will follow me on LinkedIn.

Hey eco-warriors! 🌍 As we marvel at the leaps of modern technology, there's a growing movement that’s close to my heart – the beautiful marriage of green technologies and modern homes. Our homes aren't just our sanctuaries; they're also incredible platforms for change. 🌟 "Sustainability in architecture is a responsibility we owe to future generations, so that they too can enjoy the beauty of our world." - Bryce Conner 🌟 It’s not just about installing a few solar panels or collecting rainwater (though those are fantastic starting points!). It's about a holistic approach: thinking of how our homes breathe, how they consume and give back, and how they intertwine with the environment around them. From green rooftops teeming with life to smart systems that optimize energy use, our living spaces can transform into living ecosystems. And here's the best part: integrating green tech doesn’t mean compromising on style or comfort. In fact, it often enhances it. Imagine waking up in a space that feels like an extension of the natural world, knowing you're playing a part in its preservation. So, next time you’re pondering a home upgrade, think green. Future generations will thank you for it! 🌳🏠 #GreenTechHomes #EcoArchitecture #SustainableSpaces #BIngeniousDesigns #ForOurFuture #Houstonarchitecture #houstonarchitect #houstoncustomhomes #CustomBuilders #houstonhomebuilders #houstonhomes #residentialarchitecture #residentialdesign #residentialconstruction #Architect #TexasArchitect #TexasArchitecture #HoustonDesigner #houstonbuilder

Great report from Bauhaus Earth In our work Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter we look at #climatechange #builtenvironment through the lens of the 2.8bn people who currently lack decent homes globally. This is a specific opportunity to build for the future. Often in regions with young populations, often building their homes incrementally due to #financialexclusion, and often in countries facing the sharp end of climate warming and related extreme weather incidents. We need sustainable and affordable #sheltertech solutions if we are to achieve a just transition.
