When the dam forming the Calaveras Reservoir was built nearly a century ago, it was placed on one of California’s major fault lines. In 2001, the dam was considered seismically unsafe and the San Francisco Bay Area’s biggest source of #DrinkingWater was ordered to be scaled back to less than 40% of its capacity. To mitigate this issue, a new dam needed to be constructed. The Black & Veatch team was brought on to manage the #construction of a replacement dam near the Calaveras Fault that can withstand a 7.25-magnitude earthquake. This allows San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) to again fill the reservoir, securing the resilience, vitality and reliability of water resources for some 2.7 million customers. For all my transportation folk out there, This is going to be a big deal for a few reasons: #1 : The National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) and National Windstorm Impact Reduction Program (NWIRP) will be critical on how to achieve a more resilient environment. Included within these programs is a renewed effort to improve lifeline infrastructure. Lifeline Infrastructure is an umbrella term for major utilities and transportation infrastructure.If you’ve ever done utility relocation work within a project, confidently saying that the industry is catching up to the urgency will be a welcome sight. #2: The National Windstorm Impact Reduction Program (NWIRP) will better inform policymakers and ultimately influence standards and codes for all of the built environment in wind related hazards. This will have implications to regions of the US that are maladapted to designing for higher wind loads. Florida and some of the other coastal states know all too well what a battle for space it is to accommodate all uses within a 120 foot (or less) public right of way.
