The storms Monday and Tuesday with winds upward of 70 mph led to widespread outages across the Twin Cities metro. At the outage’s worst, 250,000 Xcel Energy customers were without power. As of Wednesday evening, 95% of customers have had power restored, with about 12,000 still without power. Xcel expects to restore power to all customers by Thursday evening. But with more storms on the way, some customers may wonder how power restoration works and how areas are prioritized.

https://lnkd.in/gGXSQCGP With the recent decision by Xcel Energy to shut off power to more than 55,000 homes and businesses in the Denver/Boulder area, we have yet another threat to the already fragile grid-reliant energy infrastructure on which we depend. The fairly novel rationale to shut off power to avoid wildfires due to downed power lines can be added to the growing list of direct power-related reliability threats to homes and businesses. Aimbridge Energy's goal is to remove these threats with reliable, off-grid options like our DC Microgrid, battery storage, and intelligent power distribution platforms. We are working with residential home developers, automotive dealerships, and other commercial entities to help solve these issues all while creating direct cost savings through the avoidance of escalating utility rates.

They have about 5,000 customers restored. ——— UPDATE 4/7 - 9:30a.m.: In talks with Xcel, the Boulder City Manager reports that those impacted by yesterday’s shutdown likely won’t see energy restored until noon. They estimate about 42,000 people were impacted in the Boulder County region alone and are prioritizing outages caused by downed power lines first for safety reasons. ——— 📣 ANNOUNCEMENT 📣 With high wind conditions forecast today through Sunday, Xcel Energy is operating the electric system across Colorado to enhance public safety and decrease the risk of wildfire. In certain limited areas, Xcel Energy is planning to de-energize power lines beginning Saturday at 3 p.m. MT and lasting into Sunday. Communities that may experience a power shutoff are primarily in Boulder County, small sections of Gilpin, Jefferson, Larimer, Douglas, and Broomfield Counties, and the West Denver Metro area along the foothills. As a reminder, extreme winds can impact the system, causing an outage, and this does not necessarily mean that a customer has been proactively de-energized. 💡An estimated 55,000 Xcel Energy customers may be affected. But with its outage management system failing and extreme weather conditions, operators struggled to make the necessary repairs swiftly. The first day of spring today (March 19) falls in the middle of “shoulder season” for PJM and other grid operators. Now is the time when milder temperatures and lower electricity use enable transmission and generator owners to take equipment offline to perform necessary grid maintenance, repairs and upgrades. Shoulder season happens twice a year in PJM, between more energy-intensive winter and summer peak seasons. During the coldest and hottest weather, routine grid outages are restricted to maximize the generation and transmission available for higher electricity demand, or load. The first shoulder season of 2024 runs from Feb. 29 through June 10. Overall, April, May and October tend to the busiest times for shoulder season outages and associated grid upgrades. As the regional transmission operator for 13 states and Washington, D.C., PJM is responsible for coordinating maintenance performed by its member transmission and generation owners while maintaining the reliable flow of power. https://lnkd.in/euKs6J7C

Electricity demand eases in spring and fall, allowing for critically-needed maintenance for grid transmission and generation facilities. PJM coordinates these outages to keep the power flowing. Working behind the scenes to keep the lights on is what we do.
