Week Twelve of the #WGAStrike and not only have their SAG-AFTRA siblings joined, but now we see a wave of other labor action. But do not buy the narrative, it’s actually the other way around. Wall Street has slowly stopped negotiating with all labor. Corporate interests have closed in on the folks that make it all. Let’s roll up our sleeves in solidarity with labor. Stock market driven corporate greed is coming for all of us. #WGAStrong #SAGAFTRAStrong #ThirdCareer #TVFilmExecutive UPDATED - these mega media platforms are effing with the algorithm to keep people from educating about what’s happening with labor… if you see this please engage - it’s really hard to educate when active suppression is happening

Great article by Alex N. Press from Jacobin Magazine. The United Auto Workers' strike against the Big Three automakers in North America is a harbinger of a postmodern labor movement that will reshape the working class. This #LatinoHeritageMonth, I revisited letters from Latino activists during the expansive United Farm Workers and United Auto Workers movement of the 1960s and 1970s. In a 1970 letter to UFW members, Maria Elena Durazo wrote about the challenges faced by farm worker families: "We are fighting for a better future for our children. We want them to have access to education and healthcare. We want them to be able to grow up in a world where they are treated with dignity and respect." Similarly, in a 1973 letter to UAW members, Leonard Woodcock wrote about the challenges faced by auto workers in the face of globalization: "The auto industry is changing rapidly, and we need to make sure that our members are prepared for the challenges ahead. We need to invest in education and training so that our members can compete for the good jobs of the future." These letters provide a glimpse into the different challenges faced by farm workers and auto workers in the 1960s and 1970s. The postmodern labor movement that is emerging has built on the legacy of the UFW and UAW movements. By building on the legacy of the UFW and UAW movements and using new tactics and strategies, postmodern labor activists are working to create a more just and equitable economy for all. Ah, Labor Day weekend, the unofficial end of summer. That last chance to relax, take a trip, or have the ever popular family get together. Well before you checkout, how 'bout we give you a bit of history about Labor Day and how it came to be. Enjoy! So, back in the day, workers in the USA were facing some pretty rough conditions. Long work hours, low pay, and dangerous working environments were the norm. Kinda sounds familiar. Then, on September 5, 1882, something pretty cool happened – the first Labor Day parade was held in New York City. It was like a big shoutout to workers and their contributions to the country. But it's not all sunshine and rainbows. Fast forward a bit to the late 19th century, and you've got the Haymarket Riot of 1886. This protest in Chicago for an 8-hour workday turned violent, leading to casualties and a bit of a setback for the labor movement. And just when you thought things couldn't get more intense, along comes the Pullman Strike in 1894. Workers at the Pullman Palace Car Company were ticked off about low wages and high rents in the company town. The strike spread like wildfire and got so serious that President Grover Cleveland had to step in with federal troops to end the chaos. Speaking of Cleveland, he's a significant player in this tale. He's known for signing the law that made Labor Day a federal holiday in 1894. It was a way to honor workers and try to mend some fences after all the labor disputes and strikes. So there you have it – Labor Day in the USA has a mix of somber history and uplifting moments. It's a reminder of the struggles workers faced and a nod to the progress made in improving their conditions. #laborday #labordayweekend #working

Experienced reward professional and job evaluation geek with a strong interest in automation and the future of work. Passionate about the employee experience.
Brewdog, the Scottish craft beer company, has recently faced backlash after dropping its pledge to pay the real living wage. While some argue that this move is necessary for the company's survival, others see it as a cynical attack on low-paid workers. Regardless of the reasoning, it's clear that this decision will have a significant impact on staff morale, recruitment, retention, and the quality of service. In the hospitality industry, increased wages have a big impact. Brewdog had a tarnished reputation in many people's minds already. What are your thoughts? Check out the article below for more information. #Brewdog #RealLivingWage #HospitalityIndustry

Insights: - Thousands of Los Angeles city employees, including sanitation workers, lifeguards, and traffic officers, have gone on a 24-hour strike alleging unfair labor practices. - The strike was authorized by SEIU Local 721 because the city failed to bargain in good faith and engaged in labor practices that restricted employee and union rights. - Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated that the city has been bargaining in good faith and is committed to fair contracts for city workers. - While the strike may affect some services, such as parking enforcement and trash pickup, the city insists that it will not shut down. My observations: This strike is the latest in a series of labor disputes that have impacted Los Angeles in recent months. It highlights the importance of fair negotiations and the rights of workers. As professionals, it's crucial to stay informed about these developments, as they can have an impact on the local economy and community services. Question: How do you think this strike will affect the overall labor landscape in Los Angeles? With the July 4 holiday approaching, families are likely to spend time at municipal parks to celebrate and Parks Department staff in #Minneapolis hope their labor dispute sheds light on the increasing demands in their line of work. This week, Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board workers held an informational picket as they seek better pay and safer working conditions. They have also authorized a potential strike in the coming days. Mitchell Clendenan, service area crew leader for the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board, said they feel their requests are being ignored, while at the same time, his colleagues are asked to do more with not enough support. "In our heyday, we had upwards of 160 park keepers and that was probably in the 1980s," Clendenan noted. "Today, we only have 114 but the amount of land and parks that keep getting built keeps going up." The union representing workers, Laborers' International Union of North America Local 363, compiled data it said underscored park keepers in Minneapolis are underpaid compared to surrounding communities. Organizers said there is a gap of more than $7 an hour. Officials on the management side have consistently stated they are bargaining in good faith. As for other job challenges, Clendenan emphasized workers often start their days before the sun comes up, cleaning buildings and pools and disposing of needles and human waste. "We have to deal with the unhoused," Clendenan observed. "It's just a lot of different pressures that society kind of, just; I don't think they understand the full extent of it." He also pointed out one of their arborists was recently shocked by a power line, requiring a hospital visit. Other crew members say arborists have to earn prestigious certifications but struggle to cover living expenses based on their pay. The demands come as Minneapolis consistently lands near the top of national rankings for best park systems in the country. CMO and Marketing Consultant who makes transformative change happen for digital B2C, D2C and B2B brands
#Brewdog just LOVES to pick a fight. It's the beer version of Jeremy Clarkson - cocksure and divisive. When the world zigs, Brewdog zags - largely because, on the periphery, they find a noisy mob of hardcore advocates whose manic tub-thumping does its brand building for them - for free. In recent weeks, Brewdog has stirred up yet another storm in a pint pot by announcing it would no longer pay its employees the £12 per hour 'real living wage'. Workers will instead receive the UK government's national minimum wage of £11.44 an hour from April, as reported by the BBC, amongst others:- https://lnkd.in/euhD2-Ba It's a non-story, to be honest. Brewdog signed up to the scheme to mitigate and distract from some of their previous bad behaviours against staff and now the dust has settled, they're backing out of it like a shopper who accidentally picked up a Waitrose ready meal and realised they don't deserve a 30 quid lasagne... so far, so Brewdog. I've put the boot into Brewdog's nefarious marketing and PR practices a few times in the past, and they're clearly not for changing. Then again, the brand is worth nearly 2 Billion Dollars, so why should they? There are plenty of organisations out there who do far more unsightly things to make a Buck. Brewdog has taken this unapologetically Millwall positioning, and it works a treat. Interestingly, of the two people who 'liked' my hatchet job article about the brand on Medium a couple of years ago, one of them was James Watt... https://lnkd.in/ePcG-uSk #brewdog #beerindustry #brandbuilding #livingwage
