🚀 The rise of commercial interest in the space industry is transforming opportunities for small businesses. At the recent Space Logistics Conference, we spoke with Jason Kessler, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s SBIR/STTR Program Executive, about the critical role small firms play in advancing space technology. 🌌 NASA's SBIR/STTR programmes meet specific technological needs while fostering innovation in areas like In-Space Assembly and Manufacturing (ISAM) and Active Debris Remediation (ADR). With around $200 million in funding available annually, these programmes serve as gateways for small businesses to develop key technologies. Kessler noted the convergence of government funding and venture capital creates unique opportunities for companies like Starfish Space, which is developing satellite servicing capabilities. Kessler emphasized the importance of aligning technology development with both commercial goals and NASA's needs for success. Neurospace – Startup on the rise (Literally!) “We want to take science and industry to the moon🌛.” Irene Selvanathan is the founder and CEO of NEUROSPACE GmbH – and one of the few successful women in the space industry. In 2025, the “Tacheles” satellite, designed and co-developed by the #Berlin #startup, is to fly to the moon as part of “Artemis 2”. It will be the first manned moon mission 🛸 in more than 50 years. Our friends from Brain City Berlin talked to the engineer and founder:   ⭐ What is the approach of Neurospace? We are pursuing the so-called New Space approach, which essentially offers a fast, more cost-effective alternative to the conventional approach. For example, commercially available components are used. But we also use many classical approaches, since the moon presents a particular challenge due to its high radiation intensity, low gravity and other particularities (…). Neurospace builds robotic systems for space travel: small rovers for the moon that are modular, flexible and, above all, cost-effective. They are to work in swarms and support science and industry, for example in the exploration of the moon and the construction of a lunar base. We take part in space missions to qualify our systems. A special opportunity arose in 2023. The German Aerospace Centre (DLR) contacted us on behalf of NASA: We had 24 hours to develop a concept for a satellite that was to go on the Artemis mission. ⭐ What qualities should founders have in order to launch a start-up from a scientific background successfully? It is important to assess both the product and its market correctly. What we do is called “Deep Tech”. We work on both hardware and software. This requires a longer development time. Until you generate money, you have to rely on patient investors. But this patience can pay off. We are already selling products that can also be used on Earth. And some of our customers are considering going further with us – to the moon. ⭐ Why is Berlin a good location for a start-up like Neurospace? I have grown up here since 1985 and have seen how quickly the city has changed. Berlin is simply a great location with so many possibilities. We have more than 80 space start-ups here, which is really great. We know each other and support each other. There are also many different districts in Berlin, meaning there is a suitable place for everyone. The city is also very international. This is very important because the economy is becoming more and more international, as are the teams. Communicating in English is hardly a problem anymore in Berlin. This facilitates access to companies worldwide. And with the increasing number of companies setting up here, the opportunities for start-ups like ours to network quickly are also increasing. 🚀 On July 11th, Venture Lab Silicon Valley hosted the Japan Society of Northern California event, "A New Era in the Space Ecosystem – Future Collaboration between the US and Japan for a Post-ISS World," attracting around 100 attendees. As NASA plans to retire the ISS by 2030, a new space station operated by private companies will take its place, incorporating Japanese experimental equipment and modules. The event featured Japanese and US space tech startups discussing the post-ISS world and the opportunities and challenges of US-Japan collaboration. At the event, GM of Investment Tom Kluz presented on Niterra, and VP Craig Tibbetts introduced Niterra's innovative small radiation device (SRD). The material used in the SRD changes is emissivity based on temperature, a very useful property for thermal control on spacecraft exposed to temperature extremes in the vacuum of space. Niterra has developed a cost effective production process for the material, promising performance at one-fifth the weight and cost of conventional thermal control devices. Why It Matters: This collaboration enhances international space partnerships, driving innovation and new opportunities in space-related industries. The NASA Prizes and Challenges team released another great success story today. This incredible story shows how prizes can engage new folks in #technologydevelopment, nurturing new labs, companies and technologies! This example shows not only great #collaboration between the STMD PCC team the STMD Flight Opportunities team to merge innovative approaches to rapidly deliver #spacetechnology from diverse sources, but also with NASA Science Mission Directorate's Entrepreneurs Challenge that connected entrepreneurs with the science community. And finally with the University SmallSat Technology Partnership. "Bronco Space won $500,000 in the inaugural TechLeap Prize, Autonomous Observation Challenge, launched in 2021. The challenge sought small spacecraft technologies that could autonomously detect, locate, track, and collect data on transient events on Earth and beyond. The team, made up of both undergraduate and graduate students, developed and launched a #wildfire detection system called Bronco Ember, which used a short-wave infrared camera with AI (artificial intelligence) to improve early wildfire detection. Zachary Gaines was an undergraduate student when he participated in the first challenge through TechLeap with Bronco Space. He has since graduated and now supervises the lab at California State Polytechnic University-Pomona. Gaines notes how the #prize gave the team flexibility to invest in their lab and expand the university’s technology development and maturation capabilities. “Because TechLeap gave us prize money rather than a grant, we had the freedom to invest those funds,” said Gaines. “If we want to make a real-world impact, which we always want to do, we needed a real lab with equipment. Thanks to TechLeap, we now have space in an #innovation village right outside of campus. From the experience with TechLeap, Gaines & other team members formed the small business Pegasus Intelligence and Space, now PRISM Intelligence, and participated in another challenge – NASA’s Entrepreneurs Challenge. Gaines traces the success of PRISM back to his first TechLeap experience: “The company wouldn’t have happened if we hadn’t done TechLeap.
