Helsing, a Munich-based AI company, is in talks to raise funding in a Series C round led by General Catalyst that would value it at around $4 billion, making it one of the world’s most valuable defense tech startups. The funding round is expected to provide the company with at least $400 million, bringing its total funding to more than $750 million. Helsing, which has secured contracts with European militaries, previously raised over $200 million in a funding round also led by General Catalyst. The investment in Helsing is a significant bet on the growing defense tech ecosystem, with venture investors seeking opportunities in companies that boost national security interests. Over the past five years, venture investors have poured $100 billion into companies that contract with the defense department, according to Pitchbook. Helsing, founded in 2021 by a team of engineers, tech executives, and consultants, raised initial funding from European investors before gaining traction with a Series A funding round of over $100 million backed by Spotify founder Daniel Ek’s investment firm. Helsing’s founders, co-CEOs Torsten Reil and Dr. Gundbert Scherf, and president Niklas Köhler have been secretive about the company’s products but have focused on building a software suite to enhance military AI capabilities. The company has secured contracts with European militaries, including providing AI-powered tools for Eurofighter jet fighter pilots and AI capabilities for a multinational agreement to develop new fighter jets and drones. Helsing also signed an agreement with the Ukrainian government to provide AI capabilities for drones and UAVs. #dfense #defensetechnology #helsing #businessdor

🤖🪖 What do AI and drones have in common? They drive European defence tech, and their potential is boundless. According to a recent DealRoom report, VC investments in this sector have grown fivefold since 2018, outpacing NATO investment growth by 25% and projected to reach $1 billion in 2024. 📈 Three nations dominate, capturing 87% of investment since 2018: Germany, the UK, and France. Munich leads European cities, boosted by Helsing’s recent $487 million raise. The city’s prominence grew when Enginsight GmbH and ASOFTNET GmbH & Co. KG launched Europe’s first AI DEFENSE CENTER in October, focusing on proactive cybersecurity and continuous optimisation. Bristol and Paris follow as major defence tech hubs. Meanwhile, dual-use startups — developing technology for civilian and military applications — are gaining momentum. 🤖 Here are the key players shaping this trend in 2024: https://shorturl.at/u5G07 Helsing - Dr. Gundbert Scherf, Niklas Köhler, Torsten Reil Safran.AI (ex Preligens) - Arnaud Guérin Renaud Allioux ARX Robotics - Marc A. 🚁 BonV Aero, an Odisha-based startup incubated at AIC C.V. Raman College of Engineering Foundation, has made a landmark achievement in India's drone industry with the launch of AIR ORCA, the nation's first fully autonomous logistics drone. This pioneering moment in Indian aerospace was led by renowned Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper 🌍, famed for early investments in Tesla, SpaceX, and Hotmail. Draper’s support reinforces AIR ORCA’s potential to transform logistics, bringing access to areas where traditional methods fall short. 🌐 AIR ORCA demonstrated its impressive capabilities by setting a world record, lifting a 30 kg payload to an altitude of 19,024 feet at Umling La, Ladakh—the highest motorable pass on Earth. BonV Aero’s CEO, Satyabrata Satapathy and CTO Abinash Sahoo, highlighted that AIR ORCA is entirely designed and manufactured in India, tailored to meet specific logistics demands. Its robust engineering enables it to operate in challenging terrains, from mountainous regions to post-disaster zones, making it invaluable for civilian and military applications. 🌄Tim Draper praised AIR ORCA’s versatility, noting its broad applications, from disaster response to high-altitude defense logistics 🛡️. With Odisha emerging as a high-tech innovation hub, AIR ORCA’s success showcases India's expanding capabilities in autonomous technology. This launch cements BonV Aero's role as a key player in India's logistics and defense landscape, setting new global standards in drone tech. #innovation #bonv #drone #timdrappar #defence #india #startup #aviation

China’s unrivalled drone manufacturing capacity does not guarantee it as a war-fighting superpower. Warfare is not just about the ability to produce drones. The future of warfare will be defined by frontier technologies from space-situational awareness to deployable energy generation and edge computing. 2025 will be crucial in determining the future relationship between east and west. The technologies we invest in now will be key to shaping that future. It was a lot of fun discussing the #futureofwarfare and other ‘not so obvious’ predictions for 2025 on the Upside podcast with Dan Bowyer, Mads Jensen, and Lomax Ward. Looking forward to seeing who was right. #deeptech #startups #venturecapital
