WOW! I've posted about Space Workforce 2030 yesterday before I read this impressive article recounts all the great initiatives it has connecting kids to #aerospacecareers. "Since its April 2022 launch, SWF2030 has enlisted 29 space firms and reached out to more than five million students via individual #STEM programs, a Girl Scouts of the USA partnership, and a #NationalSpaceDay YouTube broadcast on May 3. It also created a National Space Intern Program for university students that drew 332 participants from 1569 applications in its first year. #nationalspaceday "SWF2030 organizes around three sectors: #Inspire, focusing on K through 12; #Prepare, targeting higher education; and #Employ, ensuring new employees belong, remain, and thrive at their companies. Participating companies craft their own #STEM outreach programs for K through 12, such as #STEMenrichment programs and lesson plans, streamed videos, and speakers from company researchers. For university students, SWF2030 created the National Space Intern Program to provide job experience with partner companies andhelp them understand where they fit in the overall ecosystem." Counting down no. 4… why OASA’s 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗽 2024 will be fun, aspirational, and mind-opening. Hong Kong today announced that our first Payload Specialist will be a female chief inspector of the Hong Kong Police Force, Madam Lai Ka-ting (黎家盈) who holds a doctoral degree and three kids. The position of payload specialist requires a strong background in science or engineering, and involves overseeing highly complex tasks and experiments such as taking astronautical measurements or conducting scientific research or maybe testing some cybersecurity software. Why her? One of the best ways to determine future successes is to look at a person’s past achievements. Beating 80 other candidates, Madam Lai has fed that winning habit by embarking on a doctoral degree, finishing it, and contributing to the vast knowledge of humanity. A doctorate pursuit is not for the timid and that was only the first of many hurdles to come. Imagine running marathons back-to-back, for four to five consecutive years. Too early to say why Madam Lai was chosen; but our bet is probably because of something she possesses. In Astropreneurship, we called it … “Grit.” By grit we mean having the character to finish and getting a job done. Madam Lai is probably someone who can start “and” finish a marathon, who is competent to understand the complexity in STEM and most important, operationalise some payload despite the harsh reality of outer space or her own insecurity. She knows she is it. There’s no more excuses, no other substitute. Steve Jobs has grit. Elon Musk has grit. Madam Lai has grit.
