The Pleiades, The Pleiades, also known as the Seven Sisters, is an open star cluster located in the constellation of Taurus. It is one of the closest star clusters to Earth and is easily visible to the naked eye. The cluster is dominated by hot, young blue stars, with the brightest members forming a distinctive group of stars resembling a small dipper. In Greek mythology, the Pleiades were the daughters of Atlas and Pleione, and they were pursued by Orion. The cluster has been observed and referenced by various cultures throughout history. Today, it is a subject of scientific study, providing valuable insights into stellar evolution and dynamics. This was an observation made by PACS e-Lab citizen astronomers with the Las Cumbres Observatory's 0.4m telescope with exposure time of 300 seconds for each of the Red, Blue and Green filters. The raw images were processed with Fits liberator and the Gimp software. The Lagoon Nebula, also known as Messier 8 or M8, is a giant interstellar cloud in the constellation Sagittarius. It is a stellar nursery, where new stars are actively forming. The nebula is about 4,000-6,000 light-years away from Earth and is one of the brightest and most massive star-forming regions in the Milky Way. Its distinctive shape resembles a lagoon, hence its name. The Lagoon Nebula is visible to the naked eye under dark skies and is a popular target for amateur astronomers and astrophotographers. This was an observation made with the Las Cumbres Observatory 0.4m telescope with exposure time of 300 seconds for each of the Red, Blue and Green filters. The raw images were processed with Fits liberator and the Gimp software at PACS e-Lab. The story of an iconic picture "Pale Blue Dot" Earth – our home. On this "pale blue dot" resides everyone who ever lived, their joys and sorrows, triumphs and tragedies, playing out against the vastness of space. Every individual, from mighty kings to ordinary people, all share this tiny stage. This is the only known cradle of life in the universe, a humbling realization that underscores our responsibility to cherish and protect it. The camera lingers on the Earth before fading to black, the narrator's final whisper echoing: "the only home we've ever known." The Pale Blue Dot is an iconic photograph of Earth captured by the Voyager 1 space probe in 1990. Taken from a distance of around 6 billion kilometers (3.7 billion miles) as Voyager 1 was departing our solar system, the image portrays Earth as a tiny, pale blue speck in the vastness of space. This image is a powerful reminder of our planet's isolation and fragility in the cosmic expanse, highlighting the need for responsible stewardship of our home. The photograph was a result of astronomer Carl Sagan's suggestion to turn Voyager's camera back towards Earth, offering a profound perspective on our place in the universe. #cosmos #niel_degrasse_tyson #carl_sagan #astrophysics #astrophotography #astronomy

Ice Halos over Bavaria Image Credit & Copyright: Bastian Werner Explanation: What's causing those unusual sky arcs? Ice crystals. While crossing a field of fresh snow near Füssen, Bavaria, Germany, earlier this month, the photographer noticed that he had entered an ice fog. For suspended water to freeze into an ice fog requires quite cold temperatures, and indeed the air temperature on this day was measured at well below zero. The ice fog reflected light from the Sun setting behind St. Coleman Church. The result was one of the greatest spectacles the photographer has ever seen. First, the spots in the featured picture are not background stars but suspended ice and snow. Next, two prominent ice halos are visible: the 22-degree halo and the 46-degree halo. Multiple arcs are also visible, including, from top to bottom, antisolar (subsun), circumzenithal, Parry, tangent, and parhelic (horizontal). Finally, the balloon shaped curve connecting the top arc to the Sun is the rarest of all: it is the heliac arc, created by reflection from the sides of hexagonally shaped ice crystals suspended in a horizontal orientation. #PhoenixDelivers #nasa

M101, also known as the Pinwheel Galaxy, is a stunning spiral galaxy located in the constellation Ursa Major. It's approximately 21 million light-years away from Earth. M101 is notable for its striking spiral arms, filled with bright star clusters, nebulae, and regions of active star formation. It's one of the largest and brightest galaxies visible from Earth, making it a popular target for amateur and professional astronomers alike. M101 has been extensively studied, providing insights into galactic structure, evolution, and dynamics.. This was an observation made by PACS e-Lab citizen astronomers with the Las Cumbres Observatory's 0.4m telescope with exposure time of 300 seconds for each of the Red, Blue and Green filters. The Great Globular Cluster (M13) M13 is a globular star cluster located in the constellation Hercules, approximately 25,000 light-years away. It is one of the brightest and most prominent globular clusters in the northern hemisphere, containing over 100,000 stars. M13 is estimated to be around 12 billion years old, making it a relatively ancient cluster. It is a popular target for astronomers and astrophotographers due to its brightness, size, and stunning appearance. The cluster is also known for its high concentration of RR Lyrae variable stars, which are used as "cosmic clocks" to measure distances in the universe. This was an observation made by PACS e-Lab citizen astronomers with the Las Cumbres Observatory's 0.4m telescope with exposure time of 300 seconds for each of the Red, Blue and Green filters. The raw images were processed with Fits liberator and the Gimp software. Astronomy, astrophotography and space images are wonderful to look at but like many aspects of our field, it requires visual abilities that not everyone has. #Accessibility is important, esp. when we share our images of the cosmos so that everyone has access to enjoy them. I have put together a little checklist that can be used as guidelines when writing your alt-text for your images. Many platforms now also allow you to set up your settings so that you can't actually publish the post until the alt-text is in - which serves as a good reminder. I hope this is useful! 👇 (background image is an old photo of mine) #Astronomy #Astrophotography #Astrodon #ScienceCommunication #AltText
