A paper from my time at Aalto University co-authored with Claudio Roncoli titled "Network traffic management via exclusive roads for altruistic vehicles under mixed traffic equilibrium" is finally out! It is published open-access in Transportation Research Interdisciplinary Perspectives. We look at ways of making altruistic routing choices attractive by exploring the possibility of having exclusive roads for altruists. This is relevant in the context of both route-choice as well as automated vehicles. https://lnkd.in/drNXWXND

5th International Ship Autonomy and Sustainability Summit: Still time to register for virtual or physical attendance. The sub-title for the 2023 summit was "Autonomous ships on the slope of enlightenment" and my impression is that we are still there. We are seeing obstacles related to approval of MASS for commercial operations and the international code development, but none that we cannot overcome and none that I would term showstoppers. However, this slows deployments, and we are by no means on the "plateau of productivity". A more concrete problem at hand today, is that there are still differences in opinions on how automation and humans shall cooperate to control the MASS. IMO will probably require a master also for MASS, although the master may be on shore. Hence, there will always be a human in the loop and the ship will not be fully autonomous. This has implications on the role of the human, the legal frameworks and the risks. This is the background for this year's summit: "The human-technology interface in autonomous shipping", where these themes will be discussed by leading experts. https://lnkd.in/dZ6v-Rst
