Congratulations to current Ph.D. student Melanie Buchleiter, MBA for being awarded the Institute for Social Innovation scholarship! Her dissertation focuses on "Utilizing Indigenous Worldviews to Re-define, Measure, and Carryout Business Success." Melanie's study aims to establish theory on how to utilize Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and organizing in alignment with strengths-based leadership to create a broader, more complex definition of business success. It seeks to answer questions such as: How do Indigenous people experience working in non-Indigenous-owned American businesses? This research places Indigenous people at the center and periphery of managing and organizing the ongoing life and function of organizations, considering what workplaces and communities might look like when their organizing principles are based on Indigenous knowledge and practices. "As I am completing my last semesters here at Fielding, I am finding more and more struggles in obtaining financial assistance, which is my single largest barrier to completing my studies," she said. "This scholarship helps me get closer to seeing a way to complete my Ph.D. within the next two semesters (Spring and Summer 2024). Your help is allowing me to spend less time identifying ways to cover the expense so that I have more time (and mental resources) to focus on the research study and the long-term impact that it can have on Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals, businesses, and communities. This morning as I reflect on the intense, enlightening journey that was the National University Dissertation Boot Camp, I'm filled with a profound sense of accomplishment and gratitude. Over the past two and a half days, I, alongside my fellow doctoral candidates, have been immersed in a rigorous program designed to propel us toward the completion of our dissertations with precision and scholarly rigor. The boot camp was no ordinary academic endeavor. It was a comprehensive dive into critical thinking, doctoral acumen, research study alignment, and the mastery of research methods to name a few. The dedicated NU faculty, with their wealth of knowledge and expertise, provided individualized support and insights that were nothing short of transformative. Their guidance was instrumental in demystifying the dissertation process and setting us on a path to success. What made this experience uniquely valuable was the emphasis on cohort relationships. Collaborating and engaging in both formal and informal discussions with peers and faculty not only enriched our learning but also created a support network that I am confident will extend beyond the confines of this boot camp. Completing a dissertation is a monumental task. It requires dedication, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to scholarly excellence. This boot camp has equipped us with the tools and confidence needed to undertake this challenge head-on. It's a reminder that while the journey to completing a dissertation is arduous, it is immensely rewarding and a testament to our dedication to our fields of study. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the faculty members and my fellow scholars who made this experience so invaluable.
