Our University of Minnesota summer school collaboration continues! As the group work on assessing portfolio company opportunities continues, the students have also fitted in additional visits to connect with different parts of the Cambridge life sciences ecosystem. We were very grateful to Duncan Young, Ola Zaid and Richard Ward at AstraZeneca for giving up a morning to talk about their science and innovation-led approach to R&D and the importance of collaboration. There were lots of questions from the group and we have no doubt the conversations will continue beyond the students’ time here. We’d also like to say a massive thank you to the Mischcon De Reya team for hosting us at their fantastic Cambridge offices for our first dress rehearsal. We were so focused on the first run through of presentations that we failed to get a picture, but everyone agreed it was an ideal space for the session! #SummerSchool #Collaboration #YoungTalent #GradStudent

🌟 Reflecting on the Power of Exploring Unfamiliar Spaces 🌟 Recently, I had the privilege of attending a UC Irvine School of Social Sciences panel featuring first-generation speakers, and the experience truly changed my perspective. Hearing Dr. Jeanett Castellanos, Dr. Long Bui and Dr Phoenix's diverse narratives and the challenges they overcame was truly inspirational. While I may not be a first-generation student myself, their stories resonated deeply with me, highlighting the value of learning from individuals with different backgrounds and life paths. Each speaker shared their unique journey, highlighting themes of resilience, determination, and the pursuit of opportunity. Their stories served as a poignant reminder of the privileges I've been afforded and the responsibility I have to make the most of them. It reignited my drive to work harder and seize every opportunity that comes my way. In light of this, I feel compelled to encourage my fellow students and colleagues at UCI—and beyond—to take ADVANTAGE of every campus resource available to them. Whether it's attending panels, joining clubs, or seeking mentorship, there's immense value in stepping out of our comfort zones and embracing unfamiliar spaces. Even if you are unsure where you fit in - like I was when I attended a first-gen panel while not being first-gen - get out there!!! It's in these moments of discomfort that we have the chance to grow, broaden our perspectives, and gain insights that can shape our paths forward. #Diversity #Opportunity #Inspiration #CommunityBuilding #LinkedInReflections

Aaand that's a wrap! I can't believe my research placement with In2scienceUK and Queen Mary University of London has ended! Going into this placement, I was nervous, not knowing what I was getting myself into - especially since it had a health focus - and I came from a Development background - two seemingly different worlds. But I am so incredibly grateful to have been able even to take part. Doing this placement has bolstered my confidence in realising that, despite my apparent 'lack of applicable knowledge', my passion and my lived experiences were enough to pull me through. My ability to adapt to recognize which factors exacerbated self-management of multiple long-term conditions, and link some of what I had learnt at uni for my race module enabled me to contribute in a way that I didn't think was possible. A huge shout out to my placement host, Megan Armstrong - who unfortunately isn't on LinkedIn - but made me feel at home and encouraged me to speak my mind even if I didn't have faith in myself. These eight weeks have been nothing short of incredible! I am also grateful to Action for Race Equality and Voluntary Action Islington for inviting me to speak at their joint event in front of the University of Oregon students to speak further on what the project has found. If anyone is considering doing a PhD or is dancing around the idea with it, please do apply for the in2research program - it gives you an in-depth insight (with a mentor who's well established in their academic career!) into what PHD applications entail, how to go about doing PhD applications, and also a PAID research placement. (Which to be frank, is hard to find!) If you have any other questions about the placement or questions about applications, please message me, I'll be more than happy to answer them. But for now, here is a (tiny) summarized version of what I was working on and my experiences of the program.

Championing student mental wellness in a results-fixated society | Advocate for practical financial and investment literacy
Dear Yale-NUS College Alumni, Current Students, Staff & Faculty past and present. Quick pitch! I love our LABs. I love how they’ve evolved from their beginnings, what they’ve done for us in different ways, and I have great hope for what they can do for us post-2025. I hope they stay but, again, evolve post-2025. They may not look exactly the same (read: probably mostly self-funded save for goodwill and corporate sponsorships) but immediate benefits include lending us corporate legitimacy and thematic direction to access meaningful places we otherwise cannot as tourists or individuals, and expand our networks and horizons - whether academically, professionally, or just personally (like a fun reunion and educational getaway with friends). As we build own careers and networks, our LABs can evolve quite unimaginably too, beginning from how we ourselves may become conveners, door-openers, and experts. This excites me a great deal. I want to make the case for thinking about post-2025 LABs but can’t do it alone. I hope to have a small mix of students, alumni, and staff to work on this - to pitch it to the YNC Society and keep them in the loop, plus have their blessing and YNC’s blessing, to then work with CIPE while they’re still around to see how we can develop these ideas more concretely. They are, after all, the experts while we have them all together for a final year that will come and go very quickly. If you’re interested, let’s chat and achieve alignment before we ring up our friends in the society and CIPE. If you’ve already been working on similar ideas or know someone who has been, it’d be great if we could consolidate efforts or at least keep in touch. This is, after all, for all of us. I’ll close this first call on the coming Sunday night. Will also reply within 24 hours. Reach me. Thank you ◡̈
