Thrilled to apply this knowledge in my professional journey!

2023 Year In Review:  - We completed 25 new investments (~$1M deployed) - Over 80% of these were B2B companies covering multiple verticals - On this note, the leading spaces included: AI, dev tools, digital health, and climate tech, in line with solving some of the world’s pressing needs - While the majority of companies are focused on North America, we continue to see a trend in emerging markets (particularly in South East Asia and LatAm) - 64% of companies are led by diverse teams (this includes women, people of color, immigrants, and veteran-led companies)  - We recruited 20 new incredible CIPs with diverse backgrounds as operators, investors, and founders - We ran 3 pitch competitions across the three schools and the second edition of our Tri-School Pitch Competition this fall We are still as excited as we were when we first launched the MBA Fund almost 6 years ago! We're so grateful for everyone who's been a part of the journey to date. Happy New Year! Three Things I Learned In February _____ Here are three things I learned in February 2024: 1. Always Be Raising. This isn't a new learning, but I have recently seen a few of our Founders in the PHX Ventures portfolio do a remarkable job of continuously cultivating future investor relationships. These Founders batch quarterly or semi-annual meetings with partners from 10-15 institutions who continue to express interest in their business. So when it is time to raise capital next year or the year after, these relationships are already 90% developed. It's a pro move. 2. The Best Board Meetings. Like every other VC, I sit on a lot of boards, which means I attend a lot of board meetings. I was reminded last month that the best board meetings are always characterized by transparency, not just good news. The worst board meetings are when I feel like I am in a sales pitch. The best Founders want to use their boardroom as a sounding board to talk about the hard stuff they are working on, not to promote what's working. Transparency about what's broken activates a board to do real work. 3. Ideal Investor Profile. This happens fairly regularly, but in February I had a couple of Founders reach out and aggressively tell me I'm an idiot to limit my investment thesis to B2B software. There is some very strong evidence to suggest I am an idiot, but I do not believe that investing in things I understand pretty well and where I told my investors I would invest their money is part of that body of evidence. I do think that Founders need to thoughtfully develop an Ideal Investor Profile (IIP) and then relentlessly pursue those investors rather than telling non-IIPs they are idiots. What did you learn last month? I'd love to hear from you. ____ PS - I asked my Microsoft Copilot to "create an image of someone telling a venture capitalist he is an idiot." The AI declined to generate the image. So I just grabbed this image of the most loveable idiot in America, Michael Scott.

So many lessons from this amazing program that I am taking into 2024, but at the top of the list? "Every business is an impact business!" What that means varies from one to the next, but when I see them through that lens, I can better evaluate their fit. So grateful to Jerome Engel, Sean Foote, and the UC Berkeley Executive Education at University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business for this incredible program in VC. #venturecapital #clustersofinnovation #impactinvesting
