In latest report, over 60% of Indian soonicorn founders do not hail from IITs, and over 77% have a non-IIM background! Let’s decode the educational background of India’s soonicorn founders 👇 🔶 According to the analysis of 213 soonicorn founders, over 90% graduated with some form of a degree in an institution in India and the rest graduated abroad. 🔶 Within this group, nearly 80% got engineering degrees (BTech and BE), only 3% pursued a degree each in commerce and economics, and more than 5% of the soonicorn founders opted for a degree in science. Less than 2% of these founders opted for BBA. 🔶 The fact that over 60% soonicorn founders come from a non-IIT background shows that despite a prestigious university degree being a plus for startup founders, it has not been a deciding factor for investors anymore. 🔶 Of the top 9 institutes offering an undergrad degree from where these soonicorns founders have graduated, 6 are IITs. 🔶 BITS Pilani, University of Delhi and NIT Karnataka also made it to the top 9 with 21 soonicorn founders combined. Technology Readiness Level - TRL I have seen many first-time founders (lab researchers) with great ideas and conviction about the product-to-market fit, but in many cases, they overlook TRLs especially how an investor looks at it. TRLs are classified according to the stages of the startup. Skills too vary here. (looking from the researcher's point of view) Typically, lab research falls between TRL (1-4).  Concept, Formulation, Proof of Concept, intellectual property, to Minimal Viable Prototype (MVP) - Typically academic research skills do well here - Research labs usually do great up to this point. Once the MVP is crossed and ready, the Scaling of Technology starts including testing and repeatability  (TRL 5-7). - More than academic research, skills required here would be repetitive testing, and process engineering skills are highly valuable here. Later (TRL 8- above) is high volume or market scaling. - Skills like process handling, high-volume manufacturing, and automation come in handy. Sales and marketing teams are brought in here. The company grows to an organizational level from a lab scenario from this stage. Looking as an investor, it's risky to invest at a lower TRL (1-4)  level.  Usually, seed/govt grants are sought at these stages. As one takes the company to a higher TRL level, risks are mitigated, with revenue kicking in, more investors/institutions are ready to support The three phases are equally challenging, with unique challenges at each phase. Not wading into controversy but taking it at face value, disappointed that only 1.6% of IIT Bombay students are opting to create their own startup :( This is based on stats released by Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay on placement preferences. We are talking here about one of the best institutes of India where there will be no dearth of resources be it alumni, infra, location etc. I wish this number hovered atleast around 5%. And if the institute of this repute is not able to get students to take risks, I think somewhere I will blame the institute to not doing enough to get students to break away from traditional career paths. Two years ago, nearly 85% of the founders in this elite startup club, each valued at over $1 billion, were engineers. Non-engineers, including graduates of business, commerce, and economics, now make up 9% of this group, while women constitute only about 7.2%. Notably, India has over 300,000 registered startups. Engineers still maintain an edge due to their ability to iterate quickly and their high confidence and risk-taking capabilities."
