Humans have specialized hardware in their bodies to mirror states. Initially, states were thought of as purely emotional or mental. However, this definition is too narrow. States encompass an entire configuration of biochemistry, neurology, and emotions. When your state changes, your brain and brain chemistry change too. Modern tools like EEGs can measure these changes, revealing the profound connection between our body and mind. This video dives into the intricate science behind our ability to mirror and transform states. Medical science agrees that the body has certain configurations, termed homeostatic, allowing it to perform incredible feats. For instance, when people suffer paralysis or brain damage, neighboring nerves and cells can develop plasticity, taking over the functions of damaged ones. This video explores how our neurology can adapt and carry on functions even when parts of it aren't working. Interestingly, while everyone's neurology has this inherent capability, not everyone develops plasticity. NEW: Matter Neuroscience is setting out to find a biomarker for happiness. The biotech startup has been running clinical studies on happiness for the past three years to seek to prevent neurological disease. Now, Matter has raised $26 million from VCs including ARCH Venture Partners and Polaris Partners, Business Insider has learned exclusively. Alongside the raise, Matter is releasing a beta version of its research app to the public. The app helps people capture and reflect on positive moments, understand the molecular basis for their emotions, and use that understanding to shape their future happiness. Reflecting on positive memories is the best way to reliably trigger positive emotions, Matter CEO Axel Bouchon told me. The startup hopes to one day sell its findings to pharma companies. Check out Matter’s pitch deck in Business Insider: https://lnkd.in/eSKDFNmv

Fascinating article in The Financial Times yesterday - “Google co-founder backs biotech studying psychedelic African shrub” 🍃 For those who don’t have a subscription, allow us to summarise… Sergey Brin has committed to cover about $15m of a $25m funding round for a biotech startup that is launching clinical trials looking at ibogaine as a treatment for traumatic brain injury (TBI). Ibogaine is a psychoactive substance from the iboga shrub, native to Western Africa. It’s known for its mind-altering effects and has been used by indigenous tribes for generations. It’s thought to work by interacting with the brain’s neurotransmitter systems and can affect mood, perception and cognition. 🧠 Earlier this year, a Stanford University project funded by Sergey Brin’s charitable foundation demonstrated some very positive results, finding that ibogaine therapy improved mental health symptoms and cognitive function in 30 US military veterans with TBI. Brin's investment is part of Silicon Valley’s growing interest in psychedelic biotechs with $180m already invested this year! Needless to say, Biotech is really taking off and we’re proud to be one of the companies exploring the true power of plants 🌿 https://lnkd.in/edxErr5P #biotech #biomanufacturing #plantpower
