Today, the lingering uncertainty among colleges and universities about their future is feeding a chaotic conundrum for so many in higher education leadership. For many, today’s situation is not that chaotic, but the reality of not necessarily knowing what the right answer is or not coming up with correct solutions is facilitating a calamity for so many on college campuses. No question, higher education is experiencing many difficult problems today that require informed insights that lead to intelligent solutions. Without a doubt, today colleges and universities are living in an “enigma” as they face multiple difficult problems that are often too hard to figure out. The solution, though, is not just sitting back and wondering what should be done and who should do it but engaging in active collaboration to facilitate viable solutions that can lead to legitimate problem solving. People do support what they help create. And actions speak louder than words. In memory of our father Master Sergeant Jesse Dwayne Johnson, I would like to introduce to you the inaugural year of the MSGT JDJ Memorial Scholarship. Each year this benefit shall increase. The MSGT JDJ Memorial Foundation is a testament to the enduring legacy of a remarkable individual whose impact continues to resonate with his loving family. This scholarship honors his unwavering commitment to education, his compassionate spirit, and his dedication to helping others. Jesse D. Johnson was not only a loving parent but also a mentor, a friend, and a pillar of support to countless individuals. His passion for learning was infectious, inspiring those around him to pursue their goals with zeal and determination. Whether through his words of encouragement, his acts of kindness, or his steadfast belief in the potential of every individual, he touched the lives of many in profound ways. Anything given via this foundation seeks to uphold Jesse's legacy by providing support to promising students who embody his values of resilience, integrity, and generosity of spirit. It aims to recognize and empower those who demonstrate a desire to pursue Architecture or Engineering programs at a 4-year College or University despite facing challenges, and who exhibit a genuine desire to make a positive difference in their communities. Recipients of the MSGT JDJ Memorial Scholarship will receive a $2,000 stipend for unrestricted use toward ANY college Freshman transition expenses. It is our hope that recipients will honor his memory and inspire future generations to embrace the transformative power of education and compassion. To apply for the stipend: ✍ Student must be pursuing an Architecture or Engineering degree at a 4-year College or University, graduating high school in 2024 ✍Student should demonstrate a minimum 3.0GPA ✍Student should submit a personal statement. This short essay often serves as an opportunity for students to showcase their achievements, share their personal story, discuss their career goals, and explain why they are deserving of the assistance. ✍Student should provide one letter of recommendation from a teacher, parent, or mentor who can attest to their character, academic abilities, and potential for success. To most of you Birmingham-Southern College won’t mean anything, but for me, it was home. A place where I was challenged not only physically through college athletics, but academically as well. A place where I forged friendships that have continued far past my four years on The Hilltop.  I couldn’t be more grateful for the liberal arts education that constantly pushed me outside of my comfort zones, and for the professors who were there to lead us with such compassion and care each time we walked into their classes. Unfortunately 2024 will be this schools final class. After years of financial struggles, and an unforeseen letdown from the Alabama state treasurer, BSC will be closing its doors. If at all possible, it would mean so much not just to me, but the students and faculty at BSC for any kind of donation. Students and faculty are going through the tough process of transferring schools, and finding new teaching positions, so any amount of donation may help make their transitions smoother, and ensure the remaining students have the best final months that they deserve. While it’s painful to know Birmingham-Southern will no longer have its doors open, I’ve been reflecting on a paragraph from an article written about the closing of BSC by Kyle Whitmire for Al.com. Kyle writes: “Pain isn’t meaningless and it isn’t useless. It’s a reminder and a motivator. That hurt you feel is because this thing you’ve been a part of was important”. And maybe “important” is the word to sum up my time there. The education, the life lessons, the people, the relationships, the memories. They were all important.So just as BSC taught us, no matter where we go in life, and no matter what may come our way we will move Forward, Ever.  https://lnkd.in/dMVMusgA
