Phillip was in the media again on Saturday, as featured in the Courier Mail’s article 'New Venue Openings - Foodie Chiefs Sound Alarm Over Tsunami of New Brisbane Venues'. He highlights the challenges facing Brisbane's hospitality industry. With 124 new cafe and restaurant licenses approved in just three months, Brisbane’s food scene is expanding rapidly—but is this level of growth sustainable? Phillip is calling for smarter regulation and support, advocating for small businesses to ensure that every venue has a chance to thrive, not just survive. He questions whether the city’s population can support this level of growth: "Do we need 100 new venues with the population we have? No. Can we sustain 100 new venues? No. The data tells us." At The Coffee Commune, we’re committed to being a voice for small businesses. We provide essential resources and data to help operators navigate a competitive market and make informed decisions. By persistently advocating for what small businesses need, we aim to make a positive impact on Brisbane’s hospitality landscape and support our community in growing sustainably. Professional advisor and researcher supporting agencies and in-house teams across a range of management, corporate communications and public relations issues
This is our local in London. It’s a wonderful pub on the river between Tower Bridge and Greenwich. But unfortunately I don’t get to the Ship as often as I’d like. Everyone has a relationship with a pub but it’s changing. COVID-19 and the cost of living crisis, means that a trip to the pub is more likely to be planned than spontaneous. The pub and hospitality sector itself faces rising supply, labour, energy and other costs. Brew asked us to investigate our relationship with the pub and explore the growing role of digital. It’s a Birmingham based agency that works in the pub and hospitality sector. We thought hard about the methodology. Everyone has a point of view about a trip to the pub and often it’s influenced by a good lunch or night out! We built a databank based on interviews with the pub and hospitality trade, a survey of 1,000 pub goers, and more than a million digital datapoints from 750 venues. The result is a report called Pints and Profits that explores our changing relationship and the role of digital. The good news for the pub and hospitality trade is that while we go to the pub less, we spend more when we do. The report is packed with insight. 🍺 The booking page is the most important part of a website and needs to be frictionless 🍺 Pub goers are increasingly likely to check a website menu and know what they want to order long before they arrive at the bar 🍺 Social media and influencers drive footfall, especially on TikTok - venues are designing food, drinks and decor for the mobile screen Thanks to Matthew Bowell and Adam Cox at Brew for commissioning the project. Its been a wonderful project. I owe you both a pint.

Affordable ticketed events “when people are paying a lot of money for a ticket to go to something, they do tend to drink less, they have less money to spend over the bar. But when the price of entry is low, the bar sales are often higher” 3. Brand collaborations “collaborations with exceptional brands and other venues to achieve traction and purpose” “Pubs that are multi-faceted in what they offer should be striving to reach new heights, flavour is king and pubs need to start bending to the will of ‘fresh is best’ on all levels.” 4.
