What do Tim Ferriss and Steven Spielberg have in common? 👀 They believe in Kevin Kelly. Ferriss has a chapter in "Tools of Titans" dedicated to his advice, and Spielberg has hired him to consult on films. But why? In the early 1980s Kevin helped establish Whole Earth, a publication focused on matters of technology and subculture. In 1993, he co-founded Wired. His belief? An intentional use of technology can connect people and ideas, and build a better future. Six years ago, he celebrated his birthday by gifting his children 68 bits of advice he wished he had gotten at their age. In 2023, he followed up with an additional 101 insights. Even though I clearly never had the possibility to work with him, he was and still is a big source of inspiration on the way “I do the things”! His 14 rules (in my comment below) should be part of the onboarding training of every newcomer in the aerospace and defense industry.
Whether it’s “Founder,” “Head Skunk” or simply “Kelly,” Clarence Johnson made a profound impact on multiple high tech industries with the creation of his 14 Rules and Practices, which serve as a roadmap to drive rapid innovation. I am told, Kelly used to say that “what we do is secret, but how we do it is not,” specifically referencing the 14 Rules. We have a lot to thank Kelly for, and on what would have been his 114th birthday, I want to honor his vision that continues to inspire the creation of cutting edge solutions today. Thank you, Kelly.
