#dogsofstcharles It takes a special kind of personality to be a therapy dog, but Mr. Red seems to have been born to it. There is nothing Mr. Red, a Newfoundland, loves more than visiting St. Charles and getting attention and pats from patients, families and caregivers. According to his owner Michael, Mr. Red is gregariously happy and a social butterfly, treating everyone he meets like a new best friend-excellent traits for any therapy dog! Mr. Red holds a Complex therapy rating, which means that he is stable in stressful environments and specializes in volunteering in places like the emergency department, pediatrics, and Sage View Psychiatric Center, as well as with at-risk teens. He follows in the footsteps of Clyde, Michael’s first Newfoundland dog, who also earned a complex rating and has been volunteering at St. Charles since 2017. Mr. Red began working at St. Charles in 2023, with both dogs visiting St. Charles several days a week on alternating weeks. On his days off Mr. Red loves car trips into town and road trips to California, where he and Clyde also volunteer at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Meet Sam, a Certified Child Life Specialist. “I’m Sam. I currently work as a child life specialist on an inpatient unit primarily serving neurology, burn trauma, complex care, and cardiology pediatric patient populations. Child life is so important for children’s health because it caters to the uniqueness of the medical experience on a child’s overall well-being. Child life considers the impact hospitalization has not only on physical health but on children’s development and emotional health too. Child life supports, empowers, and encourages children. Organizations like enCourage Kids work hard to provide resources for families and hospital programs across the country which transform the patient experience. Utilizing Teddy, or other stuffed animals with patients is powerful. Stuffed animals are non-threatening and help with normalization. Stuffed animals can be used for play and comfort, but also teaching. I use stuffed animals to help patients understand various procedures. Using stuffed animals has allowed patients to show their understanding, ask questions, and express their emotions.” To support child life specialists like Sam and the hospitalized children they serve, donate today. https://lnkd.in/e9v4u2UX #childllifemonth #childrenshealth #childlifespecialist #childrenshospital #encouragekids #playtherapy

Public Health Professional | Equity Leader with the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services & Co-Founder of The Dare Divas International LLC
Kudos to our MDHHS Family Planning Team! Teens and adults receiving care rated family planning clinics high: - 78% felt respected as a person during their visit - 77% felt their birth control preferences were taken seriously - 75% stated that they were provided with adequate information to make the best decisions about their birth control method We will work to increase these percentages! The top 3 reasons cited for visiting a family planning clinic in the network were: - One - to obtain birth control supplies - Two – clients liked the clinic staff - Three – it was easy to get an appointment Made we reflect on similar reasons why I sought care as a teen and young adult at a family planning clinic. Family planning is not merely a healthcare issue; it's a fundamental human right. It's about ensuring that individuals and couples have the information, resources, and autonomy to make informed choices about the size and spacing of their families. It's about empowering people to take control of their reproductive health and plan for a future that they desire. https://lnkd.in/gwtvpXxj Great job Michigan Department of Health & Human Services staff on this year’s Family Planning Update. The Importance of Child Abuse Screening in Pediatric Care. Child abuse screening should be a routine part of pediatric examinations in both emergency departments and family physician offices. This proactive approach can help identify cases of abuse early, ensuring the safety and well-being of children. Here's why child abuse screening is crucial: - Early detection: Early identification of child abuse can prevent further harm and ensure timely intervention. -Improved outcomes: Children who receive support and treatment after abuse experience better long-term outcomes. - Increased awareness: Regular screening can raise awareness of child abuse among caregivers and the community. By incorporating child abuse screening into routine pediatric care, we can create a safer and healthier environment for all children. https://lnkd.in/eJiC_K78

The House has unanimously passed two pivotal health bills aimed at improving children's and maternal health: The Maternal and Child Health Stillbirth Prevention Act of 2023: Spearheaded by Rep. Ashley Hinson and strongly supported by a bipartisan coalition, this act was passed with a resounding 408-3 vote. It allows the use of Maternal and Child Health Services Block Grant funds for stillbirth prevention research, addressing the tragic reality of over 21,000 annual stillbirths in the U.S. March of Dimes and other key advocates have endorsed this critical legislation. The Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) Reauthorization Act of 2024: Introduced by Rep. Buddy Carter and supported by Reps. Kathy Castor, John Joyce, and Kim Schrier, this bill, passed 399-13, aims to reauthorize $24 million annually from 2025 to 2029. The EMSC program, the only federal initiative dedicated to pediatric emergency care since 1984, has significantly reduced pediatric injury-related deaths by more than 40%. These bills demonstrate a strong bipartisan commitment to safeguarding our children's health, ensuring they receive the specialized care they need during critical times. #ChildHealth #MaternalHealth #HealthLegislation #StillbirthPrevention #EmergencyCare #PediatricCare #BipartisanSupport #SaveLives #HealthcareReform #Act4Kids 👶💖 Let's celebrate these legislative victories that promise a healthier future for our children and mothers!
