In an effort to raise awareness and work toward a safer community, St. Charles has partnered with Gun Owners for Responsible Gun Ownership to distribute free gun locks to St. Charles caregivers and members of the public. The project, which was funded by a grant from St. Charles’ Community Benefit program, has distributed 269 handgun locks and 193 cable locks to its caregivers, plus a few dozen given to members of the public through a variety of locations. Dr. Rick Tietz, an urgent care doctor, helped champion this effort after helping care for a preschooler who died from an accidental gunshot wound early in his career. “Since then, I have been involved in ways to prevent this from happening. As physicians, our job is to save lives and gun locks save lives," Tietz said. "Children die from accidents involving guns and that is totally preventable with education and proper use of gun locks.” With nearly 500 gun locks having been distributed, the program is already a success, Tietz said. “We very well may have already saved a life," he said. "That alone makes it worth it.”

Boulder Community Health is pleased to partner with Be SMART to share Be SMART gun safety education through all our eight BCH-owned-and-operated primary care clinics. Be SMART is a national campaign that was launched in 2015 to promote responsible gun ownership to reduce child gun death, injury and trauma that can result when a child is able to access a gun. The campaign aims to raise awareness that secure gun storage—storing guns locked, unloaded and separate from ammunition—can save children’s lives. Read the full article for complete details 👉 https://bit.ly/3RwVn0c Be SMART guidance focuses on five simple, easy-to-remember actions using the SMART acronym: Secure: Securing your guns may save a life. Be sure to follow best practices for gun storage to ensure all guns are stored unloaded and secured in a safe place that is inaccessible to children and ask your neighbors and friends to do the same. Model: Model responsible behaviors for gun ownership. Adults are responsible for making sure children are safe and understand the danger a weapon may pose. Set an example for your friends and family members. Ask: Ask about unsecured guns in the homes that your children visit. Don’t be afraid to ask if any weapons in the home are responsibly stored. Recognize: Recognize the role that guns play in suicide. More than 40% of child gun-related deaths are from suicide. Make sure that any child at risk of self-harm does not have access to guns in your home. Tell: Tell as many people as you can to Be SMART. With more than 3,963 children killed by guns every year, we simply cannot afford to be silent. Start a conversation about gun safety today. #GunSafety #FirearmSafety #ChildSafety #Safety #KeepOurKidsSafe #ResponsibleGunOwnership #ResponsibleFirearmOwnership #BESMART

Earlier this month, I was on CNN International Commercial with Paula Newton to discuss the verdict in Jennifer Crumbley’s school shooting case. This verdict underscored that parents and gun owners have a crucial responsibility to prevent children and others from having access to unlocked and unsupervised firearms. A jury found that Crumbley’s actions led to the murders of 4 innocent lives. Unfortunately, in America, 65% of gun owners have at least one unlocked firearm, allowing children and others access to them, too often with deadly results. Irresponsible behaviors, like Crumbley’s, is why an astounding 76% of school shooters under the age of 18 get their guns from home. We must promote responsible gun ownership, which includes practicing safe firearm storage. A failure to do so only means more tragedies for more families. At Brady, we are leading the charge to promote responsible gun ownership by helping change American gun culture. Our #EndFamilyFire program promotes safe storage by encouraging gun owners to keep guns locked, unloaded, and separate from ammo. Family fire incidents are shootings caused by someone having access to a gun from the home when they shouldn’t have it. According to an @AdCouncil study, gun owners who see our #EndFamilyFire ads are 5x more likely to seek info on safe storage, and nearly half begin storing their weapons more safely. That’s huge. It means countless lives saved. Finally, this verdict, borne out of tragedy, has the potential to do something truly powerful — bolster the national conversation. It is time we speak out and encourage each other to follow #SafeStorage practices so we can #EndFamilyFire, and ensure our kids come home safe each and every day. Progress Pushers, a community organization based in Seattle and King County, is actively working to reduce gun violence and empower young people. The organization offers a variety of services and programs, including gun lockbox distribution, support, community outreach, and youth empowerment initiatives. Gun violence is a major public health crisis in the United States, and it disproportionately affects communities of color. Progress Pushers is committed to addressing this issue by providing families with the resources they need to keep their children safe. The organization's gun lockbox giveaway program is just one example of its efforts to promote gun safety and prevent gun violence. Eddie Purpose, the founder of Progress Pushers, emphasizes the importance of safety, stating, "We want you, at least, to be safe. Practice safety at the least, right?" In addition to its gun safety initiatives, Progress Pushers also works to empower young people by providing them with positive role models, resources, and opportunities. The organization believes that by investing in youth, we can create a safer and more equitable future for all. Purpose highlights their commitment, stating, "We're connecting with them in schools. We're connecting with them in juvenile institutions. And we're also connecting with them, of course, in the community, speaking their language, getting them to get jobs, getting them housing, getting them to reach their goals." Progress Pushers' work is having a real impact on the community. By providing families with gun lockboxes and other resources, the organization is helping to prevent gun violence and save lives. And by empowering young people, Progress Pushers is helping to build a stronger and more resilient community. Purpose's message resonates: "The message to the community is this, right? We pushing progress, not regress." To learn more about Progress Pushers and how you can support their work, visit their website at progresspushers.org.

Outreach and Education Librarian for Region 1 of the Network of the National Library of Medicine at the Health Sciences & Human Services Library at University of Maryland, Baltimore
Region One of the NNLM has another great webinar coming up. We hope to see you there! NNLM Region One Insights: Locks in the Library: Increasing Community Access to Safe Storage Tuesday, June 11th, 1PM https://lnkd.in/e58rauuP In Anne Arundel County, Maryland, between 2020 and 2023 an average of 140 residents annually visited a hospital due to a gun-related injury, which is a 23% increase compared to previous years. The county’s public library, in partnership with the health department, set out to increase protective measures against gun injury by developing a gun lock distribution program. Safe storage is a proven strategy for improving gun safety and preventing harm or unintended access. The program aimed to increase access to safe storage devices by providing free gun cable locks to resident adults through distribution at local library branches, community events and through home visits. The program launched in 2023 as a pilot at three county library locations. In the first ten months of distribution, community members have picked up a total of 4,871 gun locks, demonstrating the opportunity for local jurisdictions to distribute gun locks through local partners to expand the reach of gun storage devices. This webinar supports the mission of the NNLM through the initiative of environmental determinants of health by increasing prevention of gun violence in built environment communities.

For me, today is not about pink hearts and flowers. Today is the sixth anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The high school I attended. The high school that, after I graduated (the same year as Columbine), underwent a massive transformation in security protocol. A security protocol that I would point out as “insanely over the top” for all the years leading up to the moment when that protocol failed. A failure that resulted in seventeen deaths: 14 children, three adults, including one of my classmates who had returned as a football coach. But this failure was never about security. It was always about gun access. Today is a reminder that this country prioritizes guns over humans. Gun violence is a clear public health issue – a leading cause of premature death, killing more than 38,000 people a year. Gun violence should also be considered a public health issue for its effects on stress load. Especially for parents. Some parents experience the very real psychological stress of day-to-day gun violence in their community. Some parents experience the very real psychological stress of potential gun violence when sending their child(ren) to school in a country where even a horrific event like Sandy Hook results in the gun lobby doubling down, allowing for the Uvalde attack ten years later. A federal ban on assault weapons was blocked by Senate Republicans in December, yet parents across the country, across the political spectrum, know the stress of a school hours text message that could contain a worst fear. We live in a country with a real possibility of tragedy. Unnecessary tragedy. Unnecessary stress. It’s the guns. 💕 🌸 Happy Valentine’s Day 🌸 💕 https://lnkd.in/gR9c8mTR (picture: my then four year old at the Oakland March For Our Lives rally in 2018)

Are you a gun owner or do you know someone who is? Worried about a loved one who keeps unlocked guns around? The Hamden Police Department is now enrolled in #projectchildsafe and has free, no questions asked #gunlocks for distribution. Eli's Garden of Healing is thrilled that the HPD enrolled in this program, at our request, and will be distributing free locks to anyone in need. No id, permit information, or anything required. Why are we pushing for responsible gun ownership for those who choose to own a gun? “Approximately one half of unintentional firearm injury deaths among children and adolescents occurred at their home; playing with or showing the firearm to another person was the most common precipitator. Overall, firearms used in unintentional injury deaths were often stored both loaded and unlocked and were commonly accessed from nightstands and other sleeping areas.”-CDC Interested in learning more? Stop by our booth at the Hamden Earth Day Celebration. We can help you get a free lock for you or for your loved ones. Let’s keep our kids safe. This small step saves lives.

King County Launches 100 Days Of Action To Tackle Gun Violence King County Executive Dow Constantine, in collaboration with local community-based organizations and the city of Seattle, has launched the 100 Days of Action, an intensive initiative to confront gun violence. Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell emphasized the critical nature of this initiative, noting the profound impact of gun violence on young people. “Nineteen percent of tenth graders reported feeling unsafe because of gun violence in Seattle. Fifty percent of eighth graders and 71% of 12th graders reported feelings of anxiety because of gun violence. Thirty percent of 12th graders reported feeling depressed as a result of insecurity and a lack of safety. How do you learn in an environment like that? You can’t,” Harrell said. The City of Seattle will expand safe passage initiatives for young people, provide immediate wraparound services for young people, develop aggressive state legislative agendas, and partner with school personnel and other stakeholders to develop a plan to reduce gun violence. Community Passageways CEO Dominique Davis assured the community that their collaboration with local government, under Constantine’s leadership, will help bring about not only 100 Days of Action but “100 days of peace.” “We commend Executive Constantine for calling for 100 Days of Action,” Davis said. “The summer months are when we see gun violence go up, and we will be in the streets every day, boots on the ground to do our part.” Davis emphasized the importance of community involvement, saying, “We will need everyone to do their part too. During the 100 Days of Action, we will work alongside our partners to create 100 Days of Peace. We have to have strong collaborations between government and our communities if we want to make real change, and this is the perfect example of what that looks like.” The 100 Days of Action initiative is modeled after similar short-term, intensive gun violence prevention programs across the country that have shown successful outcomes. Eleuthera Lisch, Director of the Regional Office of Gun Violence Prevention, emphasized the importance of collective effort.

In the face of the ongoing gun violence crisis, a call to action has been issued by the World Conference of Mayors. The organization is urging its members to take a stand against gun violence and promote gun security in their communities. The resolution passed by the WCM emphasizes the need for gun owners to secure their weapons and refrain from purchasing long guns. It also calls on Congress to reintroduce and support a bill that would require gun owners to store their weapons securely. The resolution comes as a response to the recent tragic shooting at a school, which has left many parents and educators questioning the safety of their children. The WCM's stance is clear: gun violence is not inevitable, and it's up to us to take action. As we approach the November elections, it's crucial that we vote for candidates who are committed to ending gun violence and ensuring the safety of our children. We must stand up and show our courage to end gun violence. What are your thoughts on this issue? Do you believe that we can make a difference in the fight against gun violence? Promoting Safe Gun Storage: A Crucial Step to Protect Our Children In January 2023, a child in Columbus accidentally fired a gun he found on the couch, resulting in burns and temporary hearing loss. His mother, Lashawndra Allen, reflects on how much worse the incident could have been and stresses the importance of safe firearm storage. Unintentional shootings involving children have occurred 205 times in Ohio since 2015, making it the third-highest state for such incidents. Columbus alone has seen 42 cases, highlighting the urgent need for better gun safety measures. Safe storage is a rare point of agreement among Second Amendment supporters and gun control advocates. Child access prevention laws and education on safe storage can significantly reduce these tragic incidents. Research indicates that if 20% more households stored guns locked and unloaded, youth firearm suicides and unintentional shootings could decrease by as much as 32%. Initiatives like providing free gun locks and safes, offering tax credits for safe storage purchases, and incorporating gun safety discussions into pediatric care are essential steps. While laws mandating safe storage face legal and practical challenges, promoting responsible gun ownership through education and incentives can save lives. 💯 🙏🏾 🌐 Read the full article https://lnkd.in/gqKH63Gh We need to do better and need not to wait. Today marks the 25th anniversary of a tragic day etched in our history, a day that shook us to our core. Yet, what's even more disheartening is the string of horrific events that have followed since. We cannot turn a blind eye to this reality any longer. We must confront the grim realities that plague our communities and acknowledge that a safer, more peaceful future is within our grasp. It's time to cast aside the veil of complacency and recognize that change is not only necessary but achievable. We envision a world where school shootings are mere nightmares of the past, where our schools, streets, and homes are sanctuaries, not battlegrounds. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the tireless advocates and organizations like Everytown for Gun Safety, the GIFFORDS, the BRADY CAMPAIGN TO PREVENT GUN VIOLENCE, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, and countless others who work day in and day out to fight for common-sense gun laws. Your dedication to the safety and protection of our communities, especially in our most vulnerable moments, is truly commendable. Since the tragic mass shooting at Columbine High School 25 years ago, guns have become all too prevalent in our society, infiltrating every aspect of our lives. We cannot allow this trend to continue. Our environment plays a pivotal role in our well-being, and it's imperative that we take decisive action to ensure a future where everyone can thrive and flourish. Change is not only possible, but it's also imperative. We've seen the power of change before, and now is the time to accelerate our efforts to create the world we envision—one where safety, peace, and prosperity reign supreme. Let us honor the memory of those we have lost by taking meaningful action to prevent further tragedies and create a brighter, safer future for generations to come. Together, we can make a difference. https://lnkd.in/efPNF9yX
