Leadership requires many qualities, including accountability. When addressing a structural problem in an organization, it's possible to make mistakes. In fact, speaking on behalf of a large organization is fraught with risks, so expecting perfection will often leave you disappointed. If you live in Ontario, Canada, you have surely heard of friends, family members or neighbours becoming the victims of car thefts in past few years. In Toronto alone, car thefts increased by 400% in 2023, which is astronomical. In this short video, you can listen to Constable Marco Ricciardi of the Toronto Police Service (TPS) advise residents to leave their keys at their front door to avoid being physically attacked by potential car thieves. In my opinion, this is unacceptable on a number of levels. Firstly, Ontario residents should feel safe in their own home, regardless of where they happened to leave their car keys on that day. According to its website, TPS' mission is the following: "[w]e are dedicated to delivering police services in partnership with our communities to keep Toronto the best and safest place to be." If you don't feel safe in your own home, where else would you feel that way? Secondly, it would be unfair to blame Constable Ricciardi as being solely responsible for the complicated issues of car theft, gun violence, and breaking and entering. For me, he comes across as a person who is looking out for the physical safety of the people in his community, which is laudable. However, it does speak to the underlying issue that many community members feel and ARE unsafe in their own home. Thirdly, the issue of accountability extends far beyond an individual police officer and TPS. What about our politicians? Is it not true that Justice Minister Arif Virani's government-owned Toyota Highlander XLE was stolen in November 2023, making that incident the third time a federal justice minister's car has been stolen in the past three years? In those three cases, the ministers' vehicles were government-owned, meaning that taxpayers and insurance companies had to foot the bill (disclaimer: some vehicles were recovered). But there were other federal ministers who had their vehicles stolen, further lining the pockets of criminal organizations with taxpayer dollars. If you wonder why your car insurance premiums are skyrocketing in 2024, you can see for yourself. Taxpayers, insurance companies, drivers and vehicles all pay the price for car thefts. If the solution isn't to make them easier to steal, what is? Let me know in the comments below. https://lnkd.in/eTrvhMGz #leadership #accountability #Ontario #inflation #toronto #torontopolice #insurance #costofliving

🚔 🚨 Would #police in #America ever advise citizens in their jurisdiction to do what the #Toronto police are advising their residents to do - and would you listen? "Canadian cops advise car owners to leave keys at their front door so thieves can steal without confrontation." Is this a policing capitulation? What does this do to quality of life, cost of #insurance, and perception of proactive policing? Yes, Toronto is dealing with a massive increase in vehicle theft - one vehicle is stolen every six seconds. How about fixing the problem rather than finding ways to enable it? What about a change in the criminal justice system, what about bail reform, what about the Toronto police changing their policing strategies? https://lnkd.in/dG4nu6ET

A lengthy story this week in the New York Times who have discovered that there are victims of crime (!) and their lives are severely disrupted by these crimes. Good to see, and a few additional observations: The only reference to law enforcement is when a car was recovered because police “stumbled” upon it; The only reference to catching and holding criminals accountable is when they refer to it as a political talking point, as if catching and punishing criminals is just a partisan issue, and finally; The massive increase in car thefts they highlight in Toronto is still less than HALF of the auto theft rate in Washington state. That’s how bad the auto theft rate is in our state. My point? Don’t be selective about facts, focus on victims and holding criminals accountable, and quit treating public safety as a political football- it’s actually a core function of government.

Police have issued a critical warning to residents due to a concerning rise in car thefts. The latest trend in burglaries involves thieves targeting homes specifically to steal car keys and vehicles. The severity of this issue is underlined by national data: In 2022 alone, nearly 200,000 thefts from vehicles were reported across the UK. This marked an 8% increase from 2021, highlighting a growing challenge for communities and law enforcement. 📊 The most alarming spike was observed in Avon and Somerset, with a 48% increase in vehicle thefts, followed by significant surges in Warwickshire and Northumbria. 👮♀️ In response, the Be Home Safe team and local Neighbourhood Watch are stepping up efforts, while police conduct follow-up visits to support victims. A dedicated investigative team is also pursuing all leads. The evolving tactics of modern car thieves, often part of organised gangs, necessitate a robust and multilayered approach. Seventy nine (79) vehicles were stolen in Townsville in a one (1) week period (December 2023). Did you know: a portion of every "rego" payment in Queensland is provided to The Nominal Defendant Fund. Where a vehicle is negligent for causing an accident and cannot be identified (such as a stolen vehicle which flees from the scene), The Nominal Defendant steps in to pay Damages to the injured person/s. Where the accident involves a vehicle which can have its registration plate identified (say where the crash is so bad that the stolen vehicle remains inoperable at the scene), even though stolen and likely operated by an unlicensed juvenile, the CTP Insurer for that vehicle must step in to pay Damages. Longstanding CTP Insurer, RACQ Insurance, is departing the CTP Scheme. My view is Queenslanders will need to be ready to foot the bill for a hike to their "rego" as competition between major Insurers weakens (due to less competition), and, The Nominal Defendant/CTP Insurers start compromising the influx of these CTP Claims involving stolen vehicles during our Youth Crime crisis.

This is becoming a far too common occurrence in many parts of the country. Often local criminals are used by organised crime gangs to carry out these attacks. Frustratingly few of the stolen parts are identifiable to the victims vehicles creating difficulty for police to apportion blame and charge anyone. Victims are often left with a stripped vehicle, often declared unrepairable and 'written off' by their insurance companies. The rarity of some spare parts, unavailable from manufacturers, brings about the possibility of someone undertaking repair, purchasing the victims original stolen parts to do so. Precise figures for these occurrences are difficult to establish as the crime is 'Theft from Vehicle' and not 'Theft of Vehicle'. Ironically most victims wish their vehicles had been completely stolen rather than being left with an unusable hulk of a car. Good news is that many more police officers are being trained to deal with vehicle crime as it moves up the priority scale from 'low' to 'time we did something about it'! #carcrime,#carstripping,
