In the last of our #GoodMoneyWeek series, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Ian Gaunt, Associate Director at Gravis, to dive into the pivotal role of biomass in the future of renewable energy. As the world seeks sustainable solutions to reduce our carbon footprint, biomass has emerged as a key player in the renewable energy landscape. But what exactly is biomass, and why is it so important for the energy transition? Biomass refers to organic materials – such as wood, agricultural residues, and even waste – that are used to produce energy. It’s a renewable resource that, when managed sustainably, can contribute significantly to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Stay tuned for the full video to gain some more insights into this innovative sector! #Biomass #RenewableEnergy #InfrastructureInvestments (No information contained in this video should be construed as providing financial, investment or other professional advice and should not be considered as a recommendation, invitation, or inducement to subscribe for, dispose of or purchase any such securities. #Gasification of #biomass feedstocks or biomass residues can have a major impact on GHG emission reduction. The exact amount of GHG emission reduction depends on the production pathway— from feedstock cultivation through harvesting to processing—and has to be assessed for every feedstock-to-product pathway separately. An important product of gasification technologies is #hydrogen. If hydrogen is produced from renewable electricity via electrolysis, related GHG emissions are close to zero. Gasification of forest residues for producing hydrogen also creates only very low GHG emissions. Read more about gasification on Bioenergy Review: https://lnkd.in/dFiS2ic9

SGL Carbon relies on climate-friendly manufacturing processes in the production of our own carbon fibers. By using renewable energy, the carbon footprint of our own carbon fibers can be reduced by up to 50% compared to conventional fibers (based on statistical data of GaBi life cycle assessment database). Our carbon fibers are therefore not only characterized by high tensile strength and high stiffness with low weight, but also by their climate friendliness. The basis for this is the climate-friendly energy supply at our Moses Lake site (USA) in combination with the new biomass system at the Lavradio site (Portugal). In Moses Lake, around 75,000 tons of CO₂ can be saved by purchasing electricity from hydroelectric power plants compared to a fossil-based electricity mix. In Lavradio, a new CO₂-neutral biomass system is being used to generate energy, making the production system, which was previously based on natural gas, more flexible and climate-friendly. At full capacity, the biomass plant can save more than 90,000 tons of CO₂. Did you know Greenhill Energy's preferred technology for the conversion of sustainable biomass and landfill waste is the globally proven gasification process? Gasification converts these ‘feedstock’ materials into a syngas that can then be separated into high-quality hydrogen (H2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) gas streams. Interested to learn more about the gasification process adopted by Greenhill Energy?
