FINAL CALL TO ALL CILEx MEMBERS - SGM 21 JUNE 2024 TO VOTE ON CHANGES TO BYELAWS - PLEASE REGISTER TODAY TO ATTEND AND VOTE. PLEASE NOTE THAT REGISTRATION TODAY MAY NOT BE CONFIRMED UNTIL TOMORROW - IF YOU DO NOT REGISTER TODAY, THERE IS A RISK THAT YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE CONFIRMATION IN TIME FOR THE SGM ON 21 JUNE. This is a meeting to change our Royal Charter and Byelaws. It will put new titles in place preparing for delegation of CILEx members' regulation to be transferred to the SRA; equally importantly, it will also shut down members' ability to hold CILEx to account because a significant increased number of members will be required in the future to call an SGM. CILEx proposes to raise the number of members needed to convene an SGM from 50 (fellows) to 10% of the Chartered membership, currently there are around 7,700 fellows on this current figure 770 fellows would be required to be able to call an SGM, including the new Chartered paralegals etc., this is likely to equate to (estimated) 1000 members being required to call an SGM. In addition, each of those 1000 members will need to sign the request for an SGM. By way of comparison, the Law Society members far exceed CILEx members, at around 219,000 members, and around 167,000 Law Society members that are practicing (estimated figures). If the Law Society adopted the same approach as CILEx, an SGM would require 21,900 solicitors to sign the request. The Law Society currently requires only 100 members to call an SGM. I am sure that everyone can see from the simple mathematics, that for CILEx to require 1000 members to sign off and call an SGM, compared to the Law Society being a much larger membership organisation only requiring 100, it makes a wholly disproportionate, unfair, prejudicial and unworkable proposition for CILEx members to call CILEx to account. Every Member vote is crucial at the SGM on 21 June 2024. Please make sure you use yours!
