This is #circularity in action and a milestone to be proud of. Having said that, although 80.5% is impressive, recycling rate differences between countries are significant so we can’t let up. The Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation passed by the EU earlier this year will help focus attention with clear criteria for designing packaging for recycling. As Steel for Packaging Europe says, let’s urge “all EU institutions to maintain high levels of ambition to collectively build a greener, more circular future in Europe.” #MetalRecyclesForever
Plastic vs. ❌ cardboard
📌 Corrugated cardboard packaging is widely collected and recycled in Europe 🇪🇺. Recycling of corrugated cardboard exceeded 90 %, and corrugated cardboard averaged 89 %.
📌 The cardboard industry is concerned that the new European Union rules on packaging reuse favour plastics.

📌 What do you think about the proposals? Good ✅ or bad ❌?
From scrap to purpose, this recycling system is turning bulky plastic scrap into a resource.
Any plastic production waste is shredded using a WEIMA ZMK40 four-shaft shredder, before being further reduced in size with a WNZ granulator, producing plastic granules that can be used again for manufacturing.

Week 7 #TrashTalk Topic: The Hidden Challenges of Multi-Material Recycling
Most of us understand the importance of sorting recyclables into four main categories: glass, paper, plastic, and metal. However, the reality is that many everyday products are far more complex than they appear.
Take Tetra Pak packaging, for example. It consists of six layers, including paper, aluminum foil, and polyethylene plastic. Or consider a simple T-shirt, which often combines various fabric types and threads, complicating the recycling process.
Successfully recycling these multi-material products requires meticulous separation – something many recycling facilities are not equipped to handle. This complexity leads to lower recovery rates and landfill waste.
As we work toward a circular economy, it’s imperative to recognise the widespread presence of multi-material products in our lives. From packaging to products, these items represent both a significant challenge and a vital opportunity for innovation in recycling technologies.
What multi-material products do you encounter daily, and how can we collectively drive the conversation toward better recycling solutions?

We are happy to see that the recycling rates for 2022 are even higher than in the previous year! 🥳
