Can GB rail double its passengers by 2050? Nearly 5 million extra passenger journeys per day—that’s the potential for GB rail by 2050. But achieving this ambitious target requires smart, targeted actions today. Steer’s latest analysis uncovers: - The rail market continues to grow strongly—supported by growth on the Elizabeth Line. - The changing shape of the rail market. - What the data tells us about future opportunities. The opportunity is clear, but the imperative for action is now. 🔗 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/e6Xn-jWN #railpassengers #transportplanning #sustainability #dataanalysis #wearesteer

The ORR has published its official statistics for passenger footfall at Britain’s railway stations. The statistics, developed by Steer , provide us with the annual snapshot to understand how things might be changing in the country’s use of the railway network and perhaps mobility more generally. Here colleagues Mark Brownie and Adam Stevens provide some interesting observations and comparisons. #railways #mobility #stations
Rail demand in Great Britain—have we reached a "new normal"? Steer analysis of new data released by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) shows passenger numbers are likely to have reached a “new normal” following the pandemic, and therefore organisations should adapt to these emerging patterns. The Estimates of Station Usage 2024 dataset, produced by Steer for the ORR for over a decade, highlights a pivotal moment in understanding post-pandemic demand for rail travel. Key findings: - 1.4 billion rail journeys were recorded in 2024—a 16% increase on 2023 - Steer analysed six years of trends to reveal a stabilisation in passenger demand and a shift towards a “new normal” in transport behaviour - Shorter trips outside London and the South East to/from London market (historically dominated by commuting) appear to have plateaued at 80% of 2019 levels of demand Steer has created an online interactive summary to illustrate these findings and their implications for transport strategy. Have we reached a "new normal" for rail travel? Long-distance travel is close to pre-panemic levels while London <> South East is still trailing behind. Last week, the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) released the latest Station Usage Statistics, which we helped produce. Check out our interactive summary in the link below! 🚅🚂🚉 https://lnkd.in/eqiA2veZ

Fantastic work by Adam Stevens, Mark Brownie and colleagues at Steer. Particularly the need to attract and retain younger rail passengers, who may even be re-establishing their love of independent car travel despite costs, congestion and carbon... so what do we need to do to bring them back to rail?

The Estimates of Station Usage and Origin-Destination matrix data – produced by Steer on behalf of the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) - were recently published. Our analysis takes a look at passenger demand recovery across key markets since the onset of the pandemic and considers whether 2023/24 represents a "new normal" for GB rail demand. 🚄✨ Exciting Rail Technology! 🌍 𝐒𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐬 𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐠𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐬𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 1000 𝐦𝐦 𝐭𝐨 1435 𝐦𝐦 𝐠𝐚𝐮𝐠𝐞 I recently came across an innovative solution from Switzerland that’s transforming rail travel: the variable gauge train! This technology allows trains to seamlessly switch between 1,000 mm and 1,435 mm track gauges, enhancing connectivity and efficiency across different rail networks. This is so interesting, not only does it change Gauge, but also it changes the entire height of the Train. The Wheels end up much lower at the End. The GoldenPass Express train service operated by Montreux-Oberland Bahn and BLS Lötschbergbahn uses a fleet of Stadler-built panoramic coaches with gauge-changing bogies, see here switching from metre to standard gauge. Full story: https://bit.ly/3Ffbnhn This capability not only improves operational flexibility but also facilitates cross-border travel and freight transport, making rail systems more adaptable to varying infrastructure. For example, in Australia, there are limited interstate rail services because each state uses a different rail gauge. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this technology! How do you see variable gauge trains shaping the future of rail transport? Share your insights below. 👇 #RailInnovation #VariableGauge #TransportationTechnology #Sustainability #Switzerland Video Credit: Railway Gazette International
