What not a lot of people know is that Marie founder & farmer of Marushka Farms contributes to supporting heritage breed sheep that are endangered breed to the US like sheep Romeldale which is actively supporting BIODIVERSITY among livestock animals. Safeguarding biodiversity is another sustainability aspect we must consider when sourcing natural materials. Together, we managed to create a high-end heritage breed textile, the first of its kind, from sheep Romeldale, which LD-13 fabricated into a coat and jacket back in 2023. Ostrich leather is highly prized in the fashion industry for its unique pattern, which is characterized by raised points that are distributed across a soft, durable surface. These points, or quills, are where the feathers were once attached. The majority of commercial ostrich farming and harvesting for leather occurs in South Africa, where regulations can be lax and enforcement of animal welfare laws often falls short. Ostriches in these farms are typically kept in confined spaces that do not allow for their natural behaviors such as running and socializing in flocks, leading to physical and psychological stress. The process of turning ostrich skin into leather also raises serious ethical concerns. Ostriches are often slaughtered at a young age—usually before they reach three years old. The methods used can be inhumane, with speed often prioritized over animal welfare. Beyond the ethical implications, the focus on ostrich leather production poses a threat to the species' survival in the wild. Although wild ostriches are not currently classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), their populations are vulnerable due to habitat loss and poaching. The lucrative trade in ostrich leather exacerbates these pressures by providing a high-value incentive for poaching and illegal trade. The plight of ostriches is a stark reminder of how luxury demands in one part of the world can have devastating impacts on wildlife elsewhere. I’ve been off this week on a staycation with my family, enjoying all the local goodness of the Raleigh-Durham area. While it’s been relaxing and fun, it’s hard not to notice the blistering temperatures and feel stressed about an environment that seems doomed. I try to focus on small behaviors that hopefully can add up to significant results, such as: 1. Stop buying plastic water bottles: You have so many reusable ones in your cabinet, use them! 2. Bring your own bag: Or simply don’t get a bag at all if you’re purchasing just a few items. 3. Take only what you need: I constantly remind my kids while out for ice cream that you only need 2 napkins, not 20. 4. Recycle: I’ve been known to carry cans/containers back home from an outing to ensure they don’t end up in a landfill. 5. A new report by Earthsight European retail giants linked to dirty Brazilian cotton o  Earthsight can reveal that the world’s two largest fashion brands use cotton linked to land grabbing, illegal deforestation, violence, human rights violations and corruption in Brazil.  o   Tainted cotton in H&M and Zara’s supply chains is certified as ethical by the world’s largest cotton certification scheme, Better Cotton, which has failed to detect the illegalities committed by some of Brazil's largest cotton producers.  o   Failure by the fashion sector to monitor and ensure sustainability and legality in its cotton supply chains means governments in wealthy consumer markets must regulate them. Once in place, rules have to be strictly enforced.
