Next-Gen SOC DEVELOPER| Digital Forensic Practitioner| Cyber Outreach Officer| Computer Engineer| IT Security Manager|
It's Time to Rethink! Cyberspace is like a Confusion Matrix Model. Cybersecurity landscape is advancing with constant innovations and emerging threats, as the demand for skilled professionals is higher than ever, but the hiring process has become increasingly complex and confusing. We've moved from a straightforward skillset to a maze of vendor based certifications. Hiring managers, Let’s value real-world knowledge , problem-understanding capabilities, and adaptability. While certifications are important, they shouldn't overshadow the true worth of a candidate's practical knowledge and hands-on research expertise. Let’s consider this way: 1. Certifications ≠ Competence 2. Adaptability > Specific Skills 3. Real experience over specific experience 4. Prioritize Problem-Solving 5. Diverse experience matters 6. Eliminate experience years (2+) for entry level cybersecurity positions. Hire for Resilience, Resourcefulness, and Results—the traits that make a difference when the unknowns come knocking. Sharing this for more reach in the greater Orlando area! Note to my network: Please apply! Make sure you research this opening, this company, this person and prepare your specific tailored resume for this opportunity. After applying - prepare for a phone and/or video interview. How? Search for and practice answering typical HR questions about communication, planning/organizing, team building, customer relationships, flexibility, leadership and technical ability. Practice mock interviews. Actually do the Q&A out loud even if by yourself. Video yourself answering questions to review and adjust. Yes, it's cringey! Get over yourself. :) Interviewers love to ask a question where you have to supply an example of a time where you didn't succeed (in some area). Answer truthfully, but make sure you report the silver lining of the cloud. What did you learn or how did you grow or what did you change as a result of this "failure". (Failing happens when you try and is inevitable. Everyone has failed. Learn to express any positive outcome from it, even if it is more awareness. You will be sharing vulnerability, which is also important to show your ability to and willingness to learn and grow.) Practice, but not so much that it becomes a rote answer or robotic. Use it to feel prepared and confident but realize there are always surprises. Be ready to adjust your answers on the fly. Learn about and utilize the STAR (Situation Task Action and Result) format of answering. It shouldn't just guide your interviewing preparation but also your style of resume. The *biggest* takeaway is to realize that it's all **about them**. If you focus on yourself, you will naturally be nervous. We all worry. If you focus on them (external), and what they need and how you can help them (provide value; exceed in that role) it's far easier to be passionate and engaging. If all you do is worry about how you look or sound or what you don't have or (blah blah) then you will never shift into thinking about what they need. Shifting that perspective and proving value/ideas or just passion (if you don't know anything) is MORE than most people do during an interview. Lots post require and desired. Even required may be negotiated if they believe that you can pour your all into a gaping need. Preparation alone provides growth! If you are invited to an interview, be professional/respectful but please be yourself. The more authentic you are, the more likely they will see if there's a fit and if not, you most likely wouldn't have been comfortable anyway. You can admit you are nervous. You can laugh and have genuine emotions in an interview. Make sure you also interview the company! There's usually time for your questions at the end. Have questions prepped in advance (from your earlier research) about the team, it's roadmap and/or professional development opps. Remember you are worth ensuring any new role is also a fit for you, and has growth potential! #entrylevel #cybersecurity

Cybersecurity Analyst | SOC Analyst | Threat Management/Hunter & Response Analyst | CompTIA Security+ | CompTIA CYSA+ |
When Entry-Level is Anything But: The Unrealistic Expectations for SOC Analysts In the cybersecurity world, Security Operations Center (SOC) Analysts are the first responders to security incidents. However, the expectations placed on these roles have become increasingly unrealistic. Many job postings require a laundry list of qualifications and experiences more suited to senior cybersecurity engineering positions rather than an entry-level SOC Analyst role. Companies often demand multiple certifications, years of experience, and advanced technical skills, creating a barrier for aspiring cybersecurity professionals. Such high expectations not only discourage potential candidates but also overlook the fact that those with such qualifications would be better suited for roles involving higher responsibility and pay, like cybersecurity engineers or architects. It’s time for companies to reassess and realign their job requirements to ensure that they are attracting the right talent for the right roles, without setting unreasonable standards that deter qualified but less experienced candidates. This would foster a more inclusive and effective hiring process, helping to bridge the cybersecurity skills gap and build a stronger, more resilient workforce. Let's bridge the gap between job requirements and reality. It's not just about filling positions; it's about fostering the next generation of cybersecurity defenders. What are your thoughts on this issue?
